LiveUp trialing S$10 rideshare benefit with Grab

Earn a S$10 Grab voucher upon the completion of 9/19/29 rides from now till 30 June 2018.

LiveUp is a loyalty program anchored by Lazada and Redmart. It costs $28.80 a year ($49.99 from the second year) and comes with perks at several e-commerce merchants including Uber and UberEats. You get $10 off every 10th ride with Uber (capped at 12 rides per year), plus refunded delivery fees with UberEats.

The impending exit of Uber from Singapore creates a bit of a gap in LiveUp’s offerings. You could argue that the 6 months Netflix subscription that comes with LiveUp more than justifies the cost, but if you don’t really care for that and are a heavy rideshare user, the loss of a (potential) $120 annual benefit will certainly sting. The good news is LiveUp’s not been sitting idle, as something interesting has popped up in their FAQs…

Lazada will be trialing a partnership with Grab to offer rideshare rebates

It looks like LiveUp will be trialing a partnership with Grab until the end of June. A section called Grab-Partner Benefits has appeared on Lazada.sg’s FAQ section. Here are the important things to note:

  • You earn a S$10 Grab voucher upon the completion of 9/19/29 rides (i.e on your 10/20/30th ride)
  • Within 1-2 working days after the completion of your 9/19/29 ride with Grab, you will get a S$10 ride reward found under the MyRewards section of the Grab app
  • Any transport service you use with Grab in Singapore (Grab Taxi & Limo Taxi, GrabCar (Premium), Grab 6- seater (Premium), GrabShare, JustGrab, GrabNow) will count towards your 9/19/29 rides, including those with promotions or discounts
  • This does not include GrabCycle, GrabHitch, GrabShuttle or GrabCoach
  • The ride using the S$10 ride reward will be counted towards progression for the 19/29th ride (note the slight contrast with the Uber benefit, where a ride you took with the S$10 rebate would not count towards the attainment of your next S$10)
  • This benefit is redeemable up to 3 times between 16 April to 30 June 2018

Why I say “trialing” is that the FAQ caps the benefit up to 3 times use between 16 April and 30 June 2018. My guess is they want to see the response and takeup rate before deciding whether to make this a permanent feature. This trial is all the more interesting to me given SCORE, Grab’s recent tie up with NTUC. I can’t imagine that NTUC will be too pleased with Grab working with a direct competitor, so let’s see where this goes.

The earning period has started already (it started at midnight on 16 April) but the implementation feels a bit rushed. As of right now, there’s no way to see if your membership has been activated in the Grab App, and the FAQs indicate that this is still a work in progress.

Conclusion

This is a good move by LiveUp to keep its membership value for money, and I’m hoping it becomes a permanent feature. Look out for an emailer from LiveUp with instructions on how to activate this benefit once it’s ready.

Received an email, says pretty much the same thing as the website which is… nothing much. It’s basically magic to link the Grab and Liveup accounts for now, so I’m not entirely sure how they’d start counting the rides once they finally send out linking instructions.

One hopes they count all activity including today’s, but we’ll see

“The ride using the S$10 ride reward will be counted towards progression for the 19/29th ride (note the slight contrast with the Uber benefit, where a ride you took with the S$10 rebate would not count towards the attainment of your next S$10)” Wouldn’t that be the exact same or is my evening brain switched on? With Uber you took nine rides, got $10 off the next (10th). Then nine more rides (19 total), $10 off 20th. Effectively the same, in other words. For both Uber and Grab, 30 rides means 3x $10 off, based on what you wrote for… Read more »

LiveUp should word it as 9/18/27 since a ride using the $10 voucher is treated like a ‘normal’ ride.

1-9: Get $10 voucher
10-18: Get $10 voucher
19-27: Get $10 voucher

Well…it’s simple maths…not interesting at all…they could try better than this to entice riders…as for those no brainer they will sure fall for this…as for me…damn taxis are still the cheapest ride ever
