Review: Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Review

The Royal Silk Lounge in Concourse D is Thai's flagship lounge offering decent food options and plenty of seating.

Moving on to the next lounge review in the 26 Hours in Bangkok series- for context, Thai Airways operates a few lounges in Suvarnabhumi:

  • Royal Orchid Lounge (which I’ve reviewed in my previous post)
  • Royal Silk Lounge (Business Class & Star Alliance Gold access)
  • Royal First Lounge (Royal First & Star Alliance First Class)

Having entered the transit area at Concourse D, I set off for the Royal Silk Lounge located in Concourse D which happens to be the largest lounge which Thai operates. Trudging past shop after shop yet again (ah duty free), I finally reached the entrance to the Royal Silk Lounge, which was coincidentally located right after the departure hall in which Thai Airways occupies.

To access the Royal Silk Lounge, you’ll have to take the set of escalators down a level. If you’re holding on to one of the following, you will have access to the Royal Silk Lounge at Concourse D:

  • Royal Silk Class passengers departing same day on TG operating international flight
    • No guest allowed
  • Business Class passengers departing same day on any Star Alliance operating flight
    • No guest allowed
  • Royal Orchid Plus Platinum card holder departing same day on TG operating international flight
    • One guest departing same day on any Star Alliance operating flight allowed

Showing my Singapore Airlines Business Class boarding pass to the lounge staff allowed me access into the lounge and like the Royal Orchid Lounge, you’re issued a Wi-Fi log in slip to connect to the lounge Wi-Fi and welcomed me into the lounge.

The Royal Silk Lounge spans the entire concourse and from where I was standing at the entrance, I couldn’t see the end of the lounge. It was that long. When you come down from the escalators there is a manned bar to the right of the escalators and if you want some hard liquor, it can only be found at the bar. I did not see any self pour alcohol options available throughout the lounge and only canned beer was in the fridge.

The air conditioning in the lounge was perfect in my opinion and during my photo expedition of the Royal Silk Lounge, I didn’t break out in sweat (well not that much). Throughout the lounge, there are plenty of leather armchairs available and if you’re a single traveler like myself you would most certainly find yourself staring at another passenger while having your meal due to how these are laid out.

Making my way further into the lounge, there was a small buffet section with light bites and a fridge stocked with drinks available. Coffee is available from a coffee machine and tea bags were available too at each of these little refreshment areas. The lighting at these food areas were terrible, so I do apologize for the bad photo quality.

There was nothing which caught my eye at this section and thus I walked on down towards the next section of the lounge and thankfully, the main food offerings were located here. A limited selection of hot food and fruits were on offer so if you’re looking for something more substantial, just keep walking and you’ll find more food here.

The food selection here were “meh” at best. There was not a single drop of Green Curry or even Pad Thai on offer. Although the rice from the Hainanese Chicken Rice looked and smelt pretty decent.

No, I did not stick my face into the food warmer. Or did I.

Past the main buffet area was a small Business Centre with individual cubicles which housed a PC and a printer pair. It was very quiet in here and I’d imagine this would be a nice place to have a nap with your head on the table just like how you did in secondary school if you were truly desperate.

Just a little further down from the PC Centre was another small area which has light bites. Cookies were available here (yay) as well as the standard selection of beverages. The coffee machine here looked a little more atas though compared to what was on offer at the other areas which had one.

The toilets were located just a little further down and it was also where the other entrance to the lounge was located. Phew that was a long walk. The toilets were nothing fantastic so I didn’t get a shot of it.

With the Royal Silk Lounge done and dusted, I set off for the EVA Air lounge.

Concluding Thoughts

The Royal Silk Lounge didn’t wow me but I feel that it gets the job done for Thai Airways premium passengers who are waiting for their flight and require a place to work and have a meal. I would still come to this lounge before my flight the next time I’m in Bangkok and flying out in Business (although that’s highly unlikely) just to see if Thai has improved the food offerings. Hopefully the next time I’m back, there would be some Green Curry or even Pad Thai on offer.
