PSA: Apple Pay currently not working on Singapore Airlines mobile app (update: working!)

Some alternatives while you wait for the issue to be resolved.

[Update: Apple Pay is working once more with the SQ app!]

From now till the end of 31 July 2018, Citibank is offering 8 mpd on transactions made through Apple Pay and paid for using a Citibank Rewards, Citi Prestige or Citi Ultima credit card. There is no cap on the number of miles you can earn.

In light of this promotion, many people are looking for ways of paying for everything with Apple Pay. We’ve covered some ideas here, but I want to say a quick word about the Apple Pay-Singapore Airlines situation because it’s come up quite a bit on our social channels.

The Singapore Airlines app does indeed accepts Apple Pay, which is awesome for those of you who just happen to be purchasing tickets before the 31 July cutoff. However, we’ve received multiple reports that customers who attempt to check out using Apple Pay are now encountering the following problem:

The Apple Pay button at check out has become a non-interactive element; that is, you can’t actually click on it to complete your transaction.

Those who have reached out to SQ have been told that this is a known issue and their IT team is working to get it fixed. There is currently no timeline to get the matter resolved. SQ’s IT track record has been…somewhat underwhelming, but hopefully a fix will arrive before the end of the month.

That’s little comfort to those who need to purchase their SQ tickets right this minute. A potential workaround is to try and book those tickets through an OTA. Expedia US does accept Apple Pay, but as per previous #ftr reports that’s only for hotels, not flights. Trip.com, however, does accept Apple Pay for flight bookings and that’s where I’d look in the meantime.

If all else fails, you’ll have to fall back on cards like the DBS Woman’s World Card (4 mpd on air ticket bookings, capped at $2,000 of spending each month) or the DBS Altitude Card (3 mpd on air ticket bookings, capped at $5,000 of spending each month). Or you could consider booking tickets on Qatar or Cathay Pacific, if your schedule allows- those two airlines support mobile payments through their app.
