Weekly Airfare Deals Roundup: 1 July 2018 – 7 July 2018

Your blockbuster roundup of current airfare sales

To avoid sales clutter, we’ve decided to start a weekly series on airfare deals. Here’s where we’ll feature a summary of all but the most time-sensitive of deals (e.g flash sales). Purchases made through any of the links in this article supports The Milelion through an affiliate commission.

Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines is currently running a sale from now until 16 July 2018 with all tickets bought during this sale valid for travel between now until 31 May 2019. You can view all the available destinations on offer over at the Malaysia Airlines website.

In this sale, good value Business Class fares are back with excellent Economy Class fares on offer too. London Heathrow at S$920 in Economy Class is quite a good price with Melbourne priced at S$585 being quite a good bargain as well. Up front in Business Class, flights to Japan start from S$1,581 which is still a fairly decent Business Class fare. Taipei at S$1,071 is quite a good fare as well but note that you’ll be traveling on their Boeing 737-800 on flights to Taipei.

Malaysia Airlines is concurrently holding another promotion called Golden Upgrades which runs from now until 24 July 2018. In this promotion, you will be able to be upgraded from Economy Class to Business Class on flights from/to ASEAN countries when connecting through Kuala Lumpur onward to your final destination. To enjoy this offer, simply enter “GOLDENUPGRADES” under the promo code field when performing a flight search. This offer is subject to availability. Under this promotion, selected destinations in the Malaysia Airlines network are available for booking at the Golden Upgrades rate. Malaysia Airlines has provided a guide on which destinations are available as well as how to go about obtaining the upgrade.

The Economy Upgrade fares are slightly higher than your normal Economy Promo fares to factor in the Business Class flight and privileges you will be having. Taking the example of a return flight to Tokyo Narita, we can see that a normal Economy Promo fare costs half of the Economy Upgrade fare. So although Malaysia Airlines is marketing this as a complimentary upgrade, in reality you are already paying for the upgrade. I’ve listed a comparison of the Economy Promo and Economy Upgrade fares below. The difference of close to S$300 is obvious that the upgrade isn’t actually “complimentary”. Although at S$800 odd, it is still a pretty decent price to be had given that you will have lounge access in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur on your outbound flight and at Kuala Lumpur before your flight back to Singapore.

There are great fares on offer to Europe with fares starting from S$830 to Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Business Class fares are exceptionally good with fares to London from S$3,500 and Stockholm from S$3,200. Finnair flies their new A350-900 aircraft on the Singapore – Helsinki route with Economy Class in a 3-3-3 layout and Business Class in a 1-2-1 layout so on the comfort side of things there’s not much to worry about.

LOT

LOT is running their fare sale where fares to Europe start from just S$749. It isn’t explicitly stated when the sale will end so I would recommend purchasing these tickets sooner rather than later if you’re comfortable with the price. You can view the full list of destinations on offer here.

For those of you who do not know who LOT Polish is, they’re the national airline of Poland and they have just resumed direct services between Singapore and Warsaw in late May 2018. They operate the Boeing 787 aircraft between Singapore and Warsaw where Economy Class is laid out in a 3-3-3 configuration as is the standard on all Boeing 787s. LOT has quite an extensive route network in Eastern Europe so if you’re heading there for your holidays, why not give LOT a look!

LOT also offers good PY fares for connections to Europe. At 1800-1900 SGD it beats all other PY competitors, e.g. SQ, LH, OS, BR, BA, AF, etc. The hard product seems to be decent and comparable to the likes within the LH group. Will report back in October after I tried it out.

Leanne

Hi

Assuming you have managed to book an econ upgrade on MAS, how do you go about to actually request for a biz class upgrade and how much do you have to pay for the upgrade?

Thanks.
