IHG offering 100% bonus on points sales; new PointsBreaks list out

Buy IHG Rewards Club points at 0.5 US cents each and take advantage of PointsBreaks.

From now till 17 November 2019 11.59 a.m SGT, IHG Rewards Club is offering a 100% bonus on purchased points. This is the highest public sale we see for IHG points.

Buy IHG Rewards Club Points at a 100% bonus here

Although the banner above seems to suggest that only three different packages are available, in reality you’ll unlock the 100% bonus when you buy at least 7,000 points. You can buy a maximum of 100,000 points a year (before bonuses), and with a 100% bonus, the equivalent cost per point is 0.5 US cents each.

IHG Points do not expire so long as there is at least one activity in your account every 12 months.

What can I do with IHG Rewards Club points?

The cost of an IHG rewards night ranges from 10,000 to 70,000 points, depending on category

Category Points Per Night
Category 1 10,000
Category 2 15,000
Category 3 20,000
Category 4 25,000
Category 5 30,000
Category 6 35,000
Category 7 40,000
Category 8 45,000
Category 9 50,000
Category 10 55,000
Category 11 60,000
Category 12 65,000
Category 13 70,000

As you might expect, IHG’s most aspirational properties like the InterContinental Paris  are at the highest end of the spectrum at 70,000 points per night. Given that room rates here can start at upwards of US$950 a night before tax, buying points and redeeming a room represents a big saving on revenue rates.

IHG has also launched their latest PointsBreaks promotion, which is valid for stays through 31 January 2020. With PointsBreaks, the cheapest properties start at just 5,000 points, or US$25 a night if you buy points.

The full list can be found here, but here’s some properties that caught my eye:

  • Holiday Inn Sydney St Marys (10,000 points)
  • Holiday Inn Rotorua (10,000 points)
  • Holiday Inn Dubai Festival City (15,000 points)
  • Crowne Plaza Auckland (15,000 points)
  • Holiday Inn Potts Point Sydney (15,000 points)
  • ANA Crowne Plaza Sapporo (15,000 points)
  • Crowne Plaza Istanbul Old City (15,000 points)

What card should I use to purchase IHG Rewards Club points?

IHG Rewards Club points purchases are processed by Points.com, which means you can consider using the following cards

  • OCBC 90N Card- 4.0 mpd, no minimum spend or cap
  • UOB Visa Signature- 4.0 mpd, min S$1K max S$2K of foreign currency spending in a statement period
  • Citibank Rewards Visa or Citibank Rewards Mastercardโ€“ 4.0 mpd, max S$1K a month
  • DBS Womanโ€™s World Card- 4.0 mpd, but do this at your own risk as there are mixed reports of whether DBS will credit the full bonus
  • BOC Elite Miles World Mastercard- 3.0 mpd, no cap
  • Standard Chartered Visa Infiniteโ€“ 3.0 mpd, minimum S$2K spending in a statement period

Conclusion

Although you shouldn’t buy points speculatively, IHG Rewards Club points can come in very useful if you already have confirmed travel plans. Do a quick check of the property you’re interested in staying at, and see if buying points can help you save money off the revenue rate.
