Entrance

After the elegant (and missing George Clooney) Intercontinental Amstel, my next hotel was the Andaz which I was keen to try as a new Hyatt Diamond member.

There are 2 Hyatt hotels in Amsterdam and 1 of them is at the airport. I prefer to be able to return to the hotel to rest in the afternoon and hence, am not too fond of staying at the airport.

So the Andaz was my only consideration.

The name of the hotel in full is the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht.

The theme of the hotel is the ‘Prince of Lost Dreams’, which according to the Facebook of the hotel:

” The prince who gave his name to the Prinsengracht (Princeโ€™s Canal) is also remembered as the โ€˜Prince of Lost Dreamsโ€™.
This prince was known to answer questions of people in such a way that
they were able to vividly remember their inner strengths and most
exciting dreams.
The Andaz Prince represents this legendary personality.
The silent scream of the Andaz Prince also has magic powers of its own. “

The statues of the mystical Prince are scattered throughout the hotel and can also be seen in the picture of the entrance above.

So, from the Intercontinental, I took a cab this time as the Andaz is more accessible by car in contrast to the W Amsterdam.

On arrival, I was greeted by Ms Sherry, who was from Macau, and she helped us with the checking-in as well as giving advice on the nearby sights of Amsterdam. She went into great detail and I was overwhelmed by her enthusiasm.

The hotel was previously a public library and so the relaxation lounge was so named ‘The Library’ and there was always a supply of bottled water, juices and a Happy Hour in the early evening.

After the checking-in was completed, I headed up to my assigned room on the top floor.

The corridors were a little dim but still sufficiently bright.

The Prince again!

The basic room rate for that day was 250 Euros, but by using an upgrade certificate, I managed to get an Andaz Suite for this stay.

Living space

There are plenty of books in the suite as suited to the ‘Library’ theme, including the famous Diary.

The hotel is pretty close to the Museum of Anne Frank’s House so staying here will be a good time to visit.

A big cupboard of refreshments is located next to the door and as per Andaz standards, the minibar items are included with the stay, except alcoholic drinks.

Water can always be refilled from the Library.

The bathroom was rather sizable with a bathtub and a separate shower.

The half-fishes are also a theme of the hotel.

Rain-forest Shower again! Yeah!

The walls of the toilet is the most colourful I have seen so far with paragraphs and stories to read while you are waiting to egest.

Brand of bath amenties: Zenology

One thing I didn’t really like is that the side of the living space towards the elevators are entirely made of glass, with only light curtains to protect the privacy.

I would suggest the hotel to install another layer of heavy curtains for more modesty.

I can see the guests in the elevators!

The bedside has a usual power outlet, and an immobile plate for items. Too quirky a design for me.

There was no good view from the suite, only the roof-top.

Other Parts of the Hotel

The hotel is actually big enough to have a spa, a gym which were located underground.

Small space for free weights

The Breakfast

As part of my Hyatt benefits, I was given complimentary Andaz Breakfast for 2.

As in the picture, the breakfast was going for 30 Euros per person, and the difference between the 2 types of breakfast were the “Eggs and Specialities”.

The cutlery with engravings looked pretty awesome. And heavy too!

The range of the buffet was pretty good as is obvious from the pictures

Our orders from the menu was really good and piping hot!

Being complimentary, the breakfast is undoubtedly and profusely appreciated. Thank you, Hyatt Gold Passport!

In conclusion, there is simply nothing major to fault for this stay in Andaz. As mentioned, the only imperfection was the issue of privacy in the living space.

The staff, the room, the breakfast, the Library (with the drinks) and the location were all good.

One more Amsterdam hotel review after this!
