Grab it quick: $150 back with a $500 spend at Marriott hotels with AMEX cards

Limited to 15,000 card registrations, pay by 31 January 2019.

AMEX pushes regular promotions to its cardholders, which you can find in the AMEX Offers section of your online banking. Most of the times these are fairly modest offers, like getting $10 back when you spend $150 or more at Changi Airport, or getting $3 back on $30 spending with honestbee.

But once in a while there’ll be something pretty fantastic, and that’s what we have on our hands with the just-launched Marriott cashback promotion.

The first 15,000 cards to register via this link will get $150 back when they spend $500 or more at participating Marriott hotels in China, India, Hong Kong, Japan, NZ, Singapore and Thailand.

Other points to note:

  • Bookings must be made through official Marriott channels- in other words, no OTA bookings
  • Pre-paid rates do not qualify- you must make payment at the front desk
  • Your payment must be made by 31 January 2019
  • You can use this offer once per property, up to 10 properties

The last point is the kicker for me. You can’t use this at the same property, but you can use it up to 10 times at 10 different properties. If you were to max this out, you’d save $1,500 off $5,000 worth of stays. Getting 30% off your stays while earning loyalty points for the full amount (because the $150 will be credited on the back-end to your statement) is as sweet as it gets in my book.

You’re going to want to work this into your year-end travel plans, and for those of you thinking of doing a Marriott status challenge, this is another way of reducing the overall cost.

My understanding is that holders of the AMEX Platinum Charge cardย shouldย be able to stack this promotion with the FHR program’s benefits (but take note, not all the participating properties will be under FHR), but I’d advise that you check this with the concierge when making your booking.

Conclusion

It’s a shame that my big travel plans don’t start until March next year, but with this deal I’m seriously considering doing a quick getaway in late January.

The registration works on aย per cardย basis. I could be wrong, but my reading of this is that if you have multiple AMEX cards, you’ll be able to enjoy the offer multiple times at the same property. This promotion is only available for AMEX-issued American Express cards- the ones from UOB etc won’t work.

For AMEX promotions, “per card” would indeed mean multiple cards are eligible. In fact, this applies to supp cards too (good and bad – you get to enjoy it even more times, but the spending won’t consolidate for purposes of hitting promo requirements).

London and Indonesia are not participating. Among the 3, only the HK one can use.

don’t register too many cards. doubt you can stay 20 or 30 properties. let others have a chance as this promo is limited to 15k cards.

Does GST and service charge count towards the $500 spend?

Hi all how would I know that the property is a Marriott property? Would it be safe if I used the SPG app?

Jeff

Oops found the link to the list of hotels. Thanks!

Terry

Hi there, how do I ensure that payment is made at the front desk? There is no such option on the Marriott site.

Sam

Is there anyway I can go down to front desk and book a room using a prepaid rate and getting it charged on the spot? Trying my luck here…
