From 26-31 August 2021, American Express is running an excellent flash deal for new AMEX KrisFlyer Credit Card sign-ups, exclusively for Milelion readers.
New cardholders will receive 10,000 bonus miles on their first spend (usually: 5,000 miles), and a further 15,000 bonus miles when they spend S$3,000 in the first 3 months. Together with the base miles, it’s a total of 28,300 miles for S$3,000 spend- roughly 9.4 mpd.

- 10,000 bonus miles when they make their first transaction of at least S$1 (5,000 will post initially, with a further 5,000 credited 12 weeks later)
- 10,000 bonus miles when they spend at least S$1,500 in the first 3 months of approval
- 5,000 bonus miles when they spend a further S$1,500 (total: S$3,000) in the first 3 months of approval
- 3,300 base miles for spending S$3,000 (@ 1.1 mpd)

That’s a total haul of 28,300 miles, enough for a round-trip Economy Class ticket to Thailand or Vietnam. Those who apply via SingPass MyInfo will also receive a S$20 CapitaVoucher upon first spend.

If you prefer cash over miles, the other option is to apply for the AMEX KrisFlyer Credit Card via the MGM program. Cardholders who apply via the MGM program will receive an S$80 statement credit when they spend S$2,000 in the first 3 months of approval. By spending a further S$1,000 (i.e S$3,000 total), they will receive a S$200 statement credit + 5,000 bonus miles. The total haul will be 13,300 miles + S$280. It boils down to whether you prefer 15,000 miles or S$280 cash. |

What spending is eligible?
The S$3,000 spending can be met with any purchases of eligible goods or services which post to your account within the first 3 months after approval. AMEX has a list of excluded spending categories here, but the key ones to note are:
- GrabPay top-ups
- Insurance
- SPC transactions
- Utilities
For the avoidance of doubt, hospital transactions, donations, and anything else not explicitly stated in the exclusion list will count as eligible spend.
Conclusion
If you’re new to American Express cards, this is an opportunity to generate 28,300 miles from S$3,000 of spending. Even if you’re not a big spender, you’d still get 10,000 miles with your first spend of any amount, and purchases of vouchers/gift cards will count towards the minimum spend.
This offer ends 31 August 2021, so be sure to submit your application before then.

Wondering is there an efficient (online?) way to check whether I have cross the 12-month mark since the day I cancel the last AMEX card? Call up AMEX to ask? Dont want to apply the card and later they tell me i am not a new customer. 😮

For the MGM cashback promo, I can’t figure out how we get 13,300 miles. There’s 5,000 bonus miles on top of the 3,300 miles earned from the $3,000 spend. Where did the other 5,000 miles come from?

There’s actually an ongoing link for the longest time that if you apply through krisflyer / SIA website you’ll get 10K in total on first spend.
I believe it was via a PPS email.
All the other promos they offered were always worse, this is a good one that actually matches up 🙂
Hi Aaron Based on my check with Amex, The initial 5000 miles for the first transaction of at least $1 is actually the welcome bonus from SIA. It is not issued by AMEX and the definition of “new customer” is different between SIA and AMEX. SIA will only issue the 5000 bonus miles if the cardholder is a first-time applicant of the cobrand card. (first time in his life not for the past 12 mths).
