Extended: Match KrisFlyer status (and other programmes) to SkyTeam Elite Plus

Last Updated:

From now till 31 December, ITA Airways (SkyTeam's newest member) is offering an easy status match from various airlines including SIA.

ITA Airways (the successor to bankrupt Italian flag carrier Alitalia) launched a status match offer last month, which originally lapsed on 30 November 2021.

This has now been extended till 31 December 2021, which means elite members of other frequent flyer programmes (including KrisFlyer) have another opportunity to get matched all the way to SkyTeam Elite Plus.

ITA Airways, Italy’s latest attempt at running an airline

In addition to the extension, ITA will now match status from 14 additional programmes, including ANA Mileage Club, Korean Air SKYPASS and Qatar Airways Privilege Club, to name a few.

Volare status match offer

Volare Status Match

ITA Airways’ frequent flyer programme Volare commences operations from 1 January 2022.

Elite members of the following programmes can now apply for a Volare status match, up till 31 December 2021:

  • Aeroflot – Aeroflot Bonus (new)
  • Aerolíneas Argentinas – Aerolíneas Plus (new)
  • Air Europa – Suma (new)
  • Alitalia – MilleMiglia
  • Air France/KLM – Flying Blue
  • American Airlines – AAdvantage
  • ANA – Mileage Club (new)
  • British Airways – Executive Club
  • Czech Airlines – OK Plus (new)
  • Delta Airlines – SkyMiles
  • Emirates – Skywards
  • EL Al – Matmid (new)
  • Iberia – Iberia Plus
  • Korean Air – SKYPASS (new)
  • Lufthansa – Miles and More
  • Middle East Airlines – Cedar Miles (new)
  • Qatar Airways – Privilege Club (new)
  • Royal Jordanian – Royal Club (new)
  • Saudia – Alfursan (new)
  • Singapore Airlines – KrisFlyer
  • Swiss Air – Miles & More (new)
  • TAP – Miles & Go (new)
  • Tarom – Sky Team (new- I believe Sky Team is a typo, and it should be FlyingBlue)
  • Turkish Airways – Miles&Smiles
  • United Airlines – MileagePlus

(new)= FFP wasn’t matched under the original status match offer which lapsed on 30 November 2021

If you remember the list from last time round, you’ll note that ITA has added 14 more airlines to it, including several from the Middle East (MEA, Qatar, Royal Jordanian, Saudia). There still aren’t a lot of options within East Asia, but KrisFlyer will be the most important for the majority of people reading this site anyway.

Applying for status match

  1. Sign up for a Volare membership
  2. Send an email to [email protected] with the following details
    1. Email subject: “program of origin” – “status of origin”
    2. Text of email: First name, surname; “program of origin” – “status of origin”
  3. Attach a legible copy of your current frequent flyer programme card (digital or physical) and a copy of your identity card (in PDF or JPG format)

⚠️ Note: Volare does not issue you a membership number upon joining, so you should send this email from the same account you registered with Volare.

The application must be submitted by 31 December 2021. ITA will contact you by 31 January 2022 to let you know if your application has been successful. If so, membership and SkyTeam will be valid till 31 December 2022.

With regards to points, Volare will adopt a revenue-based approach on both the earn and burn sides. You’ll earn 1 point for every €1 spent, and can use those points to offset the cost of ITA air tickets and expenses at a fixed rate (yet to be specified). It already sounds underwhelming, but come on, the main attraction here is the free status.

Volare points redemptions will start from 1 March 2022.

How are tiers matched?

The Volare programme will have four different tiers:

Tier Perks
Volare Smart
  • N/A (entry tier)
Volare Plus
  • Free ancillary services
  • Priority waitlist
  • Business Class check-in
Volare Premium
  • All the benefits of previous tier
  • Lounge access
  • Priority boarding
Volare Executive
  • All the benefits of previous tier
  • Lounge access + 1 guest
  • Free food and drink
  • Invitations to exclusive events
  • Dedicated reception
  • Complimentary checking of golf equipment

However, ITA has not revealed which tier will map to what level of SkyTeam status. As a reminder, SkyTeam has only two tiers (like Star Alliance):

  Elite Elite Plus
Priority Wait List
Preferred Seating
Priority Check-in
Priority Boarding
Extra Baggage Allowance
Priority Baggage
Lounge Access
Guaranteed Economy Class Seat

A safe bet would be that Volare Plus gets Elite, while Volare Premium and Executive get Elite Plus. Elite Plus is the tier that comes with lounge access, and the one you really want.

My experience matching from KrisFlyer

I sent in my status match application on 3 November, comprising:

  • A screenshot of my KrisFlyer Elite Gold card from the Singapore Airlines app (literally a photo of the screen, since the app annoyingly doesn’t let you take a screenshot of the membership card)
  • A copy of my passport (some people tried sending a copy of their NRIC and were rejected)

On 6 November I received an email confirming my upgrade to Volare Premium.

We are pleased to inform you that your request for Status Match to the Volare loyalty program by ITA Airways has been accepted and, from now on, you have joined the Club as a Premium Member.

If you’re a PPS or Solitaire PPS Club member, I’ve seen data points of both Premium and Executive matches, so they don’t seem to have any hard and fast rule here.

Which airlines are part of SkyTeam?

Although SkyTeam has a bit of a reputation for being the “dumping ground” alliance, it’s still got some heavy hitters like Air France, KLM and Delta. Those based in Singapore may also find SkyTeam status useful when flying with China Airlines, Garuda Indonesia or Vietnam Airlines.

  • Aeroflot
  • Aerolineas Argentinas
  • AeroMexico
  • Air Europa
  • Air France
  • China Airlines
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • ITA Airways
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM
  • Korean Air
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Saudia
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Xiamen Air

And if you’re headed to Korea for the VTL, you might enjoy some benefits on Korean Air too.

Earn KrisFlyer status without flying

Even if you don’t currently have any elite status with KrisFlyer to match, there’s still an opportunity to join in the party.

From now till 28 February 2022, Singapore Airlines is offering the opportunity to earn Elite miles or PPS Value without flying. Members can earn status credits by converting credit card points, spending on co-brand cards, spending with Kris+ and more.

⚠️ Note: KrisFlyer members will not be able to earn PPS Value, and PPS Club members will not be able to earn Elite miles

Since the Volare status match does not require any proof of a recent flight (as some status match offers do), there’s no reason why you can’t upgrade your KrisFlyer account and immediately submit a Volare match request.

SkyTeam Lounge Istanbul

While I’d much rather have Star Gold or oneworld Emerald status, I’m not about to pass up a free shot at SkyTeam Elite Plus.

The latest extension gives you till the end of 2021 to get your application in, and it’s well worth the couple of minutes in my opinion.

Won’t it mean you’ll have to collect miles in the ITA program rather than Delta or some other SkyTeam airline? That’s the bit that makes me hesitate

So check in with Volare then asked the lounge to change the FFP to Flying Blue is possible?

Interesting opportunity. Btw there also used to be a pretty easy way to get Skyteam status (send form with proof of KF status) through status match with Garuda. Got Garuda Platinum with a Krisflyer Gold match (this was ~3 years ago so not sure if that still exists).

I thought China Eastern is also part of SkyTeam, so it will be useful for travel to and around Shanghai as well.

I matched Krisflyer gold to the premium tier. Sky team Elite plus is lounge access for guest +1 so not consistent with the chart although that could potentially change.

same here.. KF Gold = Premium

My TK Elite Plus just got matched to Executive status.

Just got Premium with my Turkish Airlines Gold. Though I still don’t know my FFP number…

I received my welcome email as a Premium member. But lounge access was not listed as one of the perks.

Was matched to the Executive tier with PPS

My PPS Solitaire was matched to Premium only lol

PPS –> Premium…..seems not consistent. I did via website and could not select SQ PPS just silver and gold option, so I added a comment but apparently didn’t work

“Use the support form in your personal area or send an email to [email protected] with the following details”

Just wanted to point out that the status match can be done via their form. and it took less than 1hr for me to get approval using a photo of the membership on the phone and passport ID

No QF? That’s interesting, given the Italian diaspora in Australia…

I am very impressed with these guys. I submitted my email for the status match and received the confirmation within 15 minutes!

Anyone knows how to utilize your Volare status on Skyteam flights? I still can’t figure out what’s my Volare membership number to use!
