Back in 2020, Singapore Airlines started offering amenity kits in Business Class, a surprising move given the airline’s historical resistance to the idea.
These Penhaligon’s branded bags may not have all the bells and whistles of an Emirates kit, nor the collectability of EVA Air’s Rimowa line (since retired), but it still represented a milestone for Singapore Airlines after years of customer research and field testing.
However, if you’ve flown recently, you may have noticed that Business Class amenity kits are either unavailable or in extremely limited supply. That’s led to speculation as to whether Singapore Airlines is planning to switch providers, or even do away with the kit altogether.
I’ve now managed to get some further clarity on the situation.
Singapore Airlines amenity kit shortage to ease by end July
A Singapore Airlines spokesperson has confirmed that the airline is currently stocking fewer Business Class amenity kits than usual due to supply shortages, which it expects to resolve from end-July 2024.
💬 SIA Statement |
|
Affected passengers will be offered a Premium Economy Class amenity kit in the interim. These kits are produced in partnership with Out of the Woods, a US-based manufacturer of eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle products.
The amenity pouch is made from eco-friendly Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified kraft paper fabric. Inside, passengers will find lip balm, an eye mask and slippers. Additional toiletries, such as dental kits and moisturisers, will continue to be available in the lavatory.
These kits were launched on 31 March 2024 along with numerous other enhancements to the Premium Economy Class soft product such as new tableware, physical menu cards, and an expanded selection of meals, snacks and beverages.
You can read all about these changes in the article below.
Singapore Airlines Premium Economy gets new dining options, wines, serviceware and amenity kits
The SIA spokesperson further clarified that Penhaligon’s will continue to be its partner for Business Class amenity kits, quashing rumours that the shortage might be the prelude to a switchover to a different brand.
As a reminder, amenity kits are offered on request on Business Class flights of at least six hours. You can try your luck on shorter trips, in the off chance there’s some leftover from the previous flight, but it’s not guaranteed.
What do Business Class amenity kits contain?
Singapore Airlines’ Business Class amenity kit comes in green, blue, brown and grey zip bags. Each kit contains:
- Quercus hand lotion (30ml)
- Quercus facial mist (7ml)
- Quercus lip balm (4g)
- a clear ziplock bag
- a gift card that invites you to visit a Penhaligon’s store for a “fragrance profiling experience”
Sometimes the amenity kit is already waiting at your seat, and other times you’ll need to request for one.
And, of course, people are selling them on Carousell from S$8 a pop.
First Class amenity kits unaffected
There is no impact on Singapore Airlines Suites and First Class passengers, who will continue to receive Lalique amenity kits on flights above five hours.
If you’re flying out of Singapore, you’ll receive either a male or female amenity kit.
The his kit contains:
- Lalique Encre Noire Eau De Toilette (30ml)
- Lalique Encre Noire Body Lotion (30ml)
- Lalique Encre Noire Facial Mist (20ml)
- Lalique Encre Noire Lip Balm (6ml)
The hers kit contains:
- Lalique L’Amour Eau De Parfum (30ml)
- Lalique L’Amour Hand Cream (25ml)
- Lalique L’Amour Facial Mist (20ml)
- Lalique L’Amour Lip Balm (6ml)
If you’re flying into Singapore, you’ll receive a unisex kit.
The unisex kit contains:
- Lalique Neroli Soap (50g)
- Lalique Neroli Room Spray (30ml)
- Lalique Neroli Body Lotion (30ml)
- Lalique Neroli Lip Balm (8ml)
Note: Updates to amenity kit contents |
Singapore Airlines has updated the contents of its First Class amenity kits to include fragrances from the L’Insoumis range (thanks to Andy for sending this in). |
Conclusion
Singapore Airlines is currently encountering a shortage of Business Class amenity kits, which it expects to resolve by the end of this month. In the meantime, affected passengers will be offered a Premium Economy Class amenity kit instead.
Frequent travellers may shrug, already having a ton of these at home, but for first-time Business Class passengers these make a lovely memento of what could be a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Did you get an amenity kit on your most recent SIA Business Class flight?
due to a temporary shortage, why don’t they provide first class amenities instead?
Same reason why the sushi restaurant didn’t provide you with otoro FOC when they ran out of maguro?
Haha excellent response.
Sure. But a off cut of chutoro could be offered instead as service recovery.
Who am I kidding, only service-first places will do that.
1. No other airline is experiencing this “problem”. And it’s not like the items in the amenity kit are so unique that they cannot source from other suppliers.
2. Singapore Airlines just announced record profits, 8 months bonus for all staff and $12m windfall salary for their CEO.
Coincidence? I think not.
It’s not a good look for sure.
It’s not as if their business class amenity kit is so difficult to make or exclusive like the rimowa kit
Not to mentioned passengers pay a huge premium to fly SQ > other competitor product
And they just got huge profits
Shameful really
Paid premium business class fares, get miserable 3 Penhaligon items … Though the brand is reputable but the items offered is miserable compared to other premium airlines. It is a shame that SQ continues with them. Previously, you will also get a card where you can redeem a bottle of hand cream or shower gel at any of the Penhaligon store, but again you will either be responded with “no stock” or get a dirty look from the store’s representative “another SQ customer comes for redemption”. SQ, please wake up and impress your premium payers not only your in-flight service,… Read more »
Definitely pales in comparison to Qatar business class; their diptyque kit is the same standard as SQ’s First Class kit.
Well. Not really, particularly for routes where you get a paper box with QR.
Miss the non weird scented lip balm on JL J.
Sometimes its good that SQ fall off the rankings to give them a wakeup call. That way, they can pull up their socks, or, at the very least put some on. There is little doubt that SQ standards have fallen over the past decade since the current CEO took over. Singapore is so small and its actually the best place to run a pickup service for their most premium customers. Passengers are often rushed through the first class check in without giving passengers a breather. Maybe allow passengers to sit down and offer a drink and towel. The agents can… Read more »
The Penhaligon’s pouches are great for storing foreign currency
My wife and I flew business a couple of months ago IAH-MAN and the amenity kits were surprisingly sparse. At a minimum I would have expected a pen in addition to what was inside.
Disappointing to see such a lack of investment or review for their kits despite netting billions in profit
Please update your title to something more suitable
“Worlds best airline” runs out of second grade business class amenity kits and replaces it with premium economy kits
They are “sorry” for the inconvenience
Oh, if you don’t ask? We won’t give you too
That being said, thank you for paying a huge premium over other competitors
our huge profits and bonuses have to come from somewhere right?
Maybe supply issues but even before this there seems to be a reluctance to provide them willingly. Last year they ran out on a half empty business cabin. Can’t help but feel this penny pinching policy not only cheapens the SQ product but will eventually be put off many none SG based customers. When I flew back from LHR 2 weeks ago in business class I asked for a bear for my daughter at home and they said it’s only for younger passengers… unless they changed their bear policy for business passengers then again it’s penny wise pound foolish
Man this is absolutely ridiculous. Can’t even spare a stuffed toy can you believe it.
Yeah that’s ridiculous. It’s obvious that SQ is just cutting corners. Really short sighted management.
Imagine decades to build a brand based on premium pricing for premium product…and now cutting back on things that made you YOU
Shame
I have asked for the bears many times (got the limited runs of the Chef, the Disney 100 etc). Always received them on various ex-SIN to Europe/North Asia flights. Flying solo each time in business. The key is to ask on ex-SIN flights. The bears are only uplifted in Singapore and nowhere else. So if they are gone by the time they reach the destination for the return flight to SIN, then that’s it. The crew probably should have given you the simple reason that they had either run out (or that as a matter of policy, they usually wait… Read more »
Hahahahaha! First World Problems.
Flew SQ318 into LHR on Wednesday and no kits available – given Premium economy one (when we asked)
Maybe they should just “buy” more kits instead of “uplifting” them.
These kits are a joke
The contents are laughable and nearly useless.
Sure the argument is that there are combs, toothbrushes etc in the lavs, but SQ has to do more.
On my biz class flight back from Osaka last mth, flight was delayed, “turbulence” caused svc to start only 1.5hrs after take off.
No slippers, eye masks, ear plugs offered.
Meal was almost inedible.
And of cos no amenity kit
In fact, flew biz to Maldives in April too. No amenity kit too.
Sometimes I wonder why does SQ remain where it does in rankings.
sometimes i wonder why you continue to fly SQ
Did you ask for slippers, eye masks, and ear plugs? They may forget (yes, then their fault) but you can still always ask, and I’ve never been refused when I asked for these. I have many of these amenity kits and I have to say I have not used many of them. Penhaligon’s, Lalique, and still have almost ten Ferragamo kits. They must be getting some info that tells them that majority of passengers don’t actually fully use the kits. Yes, there will always be those people on Milelion here clamouring for them… But personally, my wife and I find… Read more »
I think regardless if the passengers use them or not, they should be offered and not begged for.
dont forget passengers are paying premium pricing and we are talking about the “worlds best airline” (well at least it used to be, today I would much rather fly Qatar)
Agree with u Jxx.
This is SQ we r talking about.
Not some budget airlines where you have to ask for things.
Svc should be offered and it’s then the passengers’ prerogative.
The Lalique and Ferragamo fragrances are excellent for making the home toilet smell good! LOL. F Lalique kits have a few variations but I do like the latest simple black one. Big enough to be useful for socks! Candles and crystal fish are pointless to me. With the sky high prices SQ is charging, I will like one in real leather! Etihad is nice. Air Canada aqua di parma has a nice tan colour but the PVC material is the let down.
SQ638 last night. Service was really rushed. Food was meh. Crew was trying but CMI. Not as polished as before. Once they open their mouths..haiz…They look so flustered. No business amenity kit. Premium economy kit provided. There is no consistency in the design language for these amenity kits. From first to business to premium economy. The contents are the usual items. The packaging really cannot make it. Green colour because….?? Perhaps blue makes more sense for SQ. I am sure SQ could provide something better given the fares they charge. 7 to over 10k per trip is not joke ok.… Read more »
If you can, fly some other airline. I have been flying with SQ Business class and I’m a PPS member, I only received the full kit once or twice. Now only I get the slippers and sunshade. Anything else I have to ask them. The service and the food are getting off the standard. Now they are the 2nd and very soon they will be at the bottom of the list. I have instructed my company globally not to use SQ.
Other airlines… BA, QR, CX, etc. NEVER run out of amenity kits and they are readily provided at the seats upon entry. Enough said.
Poor form. SQ. Poor form. Recent flight Bne to SG. No biz class kits available. Poor form
Even if available. Such lousy items in the kits. Miserable.
Also cut back on hot towels
Less of that service
Think towels.
Such falling standards
Poor form.
Ha. All you folks paying big $$$s and getting triggered by a $5 amenity kit?? Seriously? I’ve flown J on several airlines (including SQ) and never once thought to judge the experience by the kit.
The FCL male amenity kit (ex SIN) has changed, now it has Lalique L’Insoumis Ma Force eau de toilette and hand cream. It’s a bit too floral for my liking (I wondered for a while whether they had accidentally given me the ladies’ amenity kit) and I would prefer to have the Encre Noir one back.
thanks for the heads up! has been a while since I last flew F. if you have any pics feel free to submit them via the contact us form, merci.
I actually like the newer F class Lalique kit. Its actually big enough for me to want to reuse it. Perfect size for socks and underwear. I like the fragrance as its great for making my toilet smell good, just like the old Ferragamo fragrance of the past. The candles they used to include smell terrible and the original crystal fish is so pointless.
My family of 3 traveled last June 29th Business Class from LAX to NRT and received premium economy travel kits. 😞 I had to ask for these, too. Such a shame.
