Singapore Airlines trials priority security screening lanes at Changi Airport

Singapore Airlines Suites, First Class and Solitaire PPS Club members can now use priority security lanes at selected gates in Changi Terminal 3.

While Singapore Airlines First and Business Class passengers can enjoy priority security screening lanes when departing from certain overseas airports, there are no such privileges at its home base of Changi Airport.

In fact, the system here is positively egalitarian — whether you’re soaring in Suites, or crammed into a middle seat in Economy, everyone joins the same security line, period.

However, that may soon change, at least for a select group of Singapore Airlines passengers.

Singapore Airlines trialling priority security lanes at Changi

When passing through Changi Airport Terminal 3 just after midnight yesterday, MileLion reader JDP spotted a priority lane for Suites, First Class and Solitaire PPS Club members at the A cluster security checkpoint, which serves gates A1 to A8.

According to a SATS agent, this was a trial arrangement, which might also be extended to the B cluster gates (B1-B4). It’s not clear at the moment whether priority screening will also be expanded to the third set of cluster gates at Terminal 3 (A16-A20), or even to the pier (i.e. individual) gates.

And even if it does become a permanent feature, I don’t expect we’ll see it expanded to Business Class and PPS Club members (much less lowly Star Golds and KrisFlyer Elite Golds!). On certain flights (e.g. Jakarta), that might amount to a significant proportion of all passengers!

You might be wondering why it’s taken so long for Singapore Airlines to offer priority security at Changi, and the answer is more structural than philosophical.

Priority screening lanes are arguably unnecessary at Changi Airport, where (Terminal 4 aside) all security screening is done at the gates. This decentralised arrangement naturally limits queue sizes because only passengers on that specific flight are processed. If you’re at a pier gate, the incremental benefit might be negligible, especially if you hang around the lounge as long as possible and board last.

However, wait times at the cluster gates can be more significant, especially during peak departure timings, so if priority security lanes are to be offered, this would be the most logical place to do it.

Besides, Singapore Airlines’ preference is to move the premium ground experience upstream, by offering Suites, First Class and Solitaire PPS Club members a private check-in reception, together with a dedicated immigration channel in Terminal 3.

Once you finish the check-in and immigration formalities, you’re just minutes from the SilverKris Lounges, which is where most passengers spend their pre-departure time, instead of at the gate.

Other airlines already offer priority security lanes

STARLUX and several other airlines already offer premium security lanes out of Changi

If you’ve flown with other airlines out of Changi Airport, such as ANA, Lufthansa, STARLUX, Turkish and United, you may have spotted that they already offer priority security lanes for premium cabin and elite frequent flyers.

But these airlines only offer a handful of flights a day, which makes it logistically easier to allocate staff to manage a priority lane, set up signage, and establish queue segregation at specific gates. It’s a much more complicated (and expensive) exercise for a carrier like Singapore Airlines, and again, the question is how much incremental benefit there is.

If I were a STARLUX passenger, for example, I’d much rather that money be invested towards securing a better lounge arrangement than the rather dire SATS Premier Lounge!

Changi has experimented with pre-booked security slot timings

The short-lived ChangiQ system involved pre-booking a time slot for security screening.

It may surprise you to know that this is not Singapore Airlines’ first brush with priority security screening at Changi.

Back in 2022, Changi Airport trialled a service called ChangiQ, a virtual queuing system that allowed Singapore Airlines passengers to pre-book time slots for security screening via the iChangi app, then skip the queue when they arrived during their selected window.

To ensure safe distancing in the terminals, passengers travelling on selected airlines can now book a check-in and pre-board screening queue slot with ChangiQ, available on the iChangi app.

Simply add your flight details in iChangi to make a queue booking, to avoid the hassle of having to wait in line for your turn at the gate holdroom.

This was a COVID-era innovation aimed at reducing congestion at security checkpoints, though I don’t recall ever using it myself. Ultimately, it didn’t gain much traction, probably because security queues at Changi aren’t severe enough to make such a service necessary.

As far as I know, the concept has been abandoned for now, but here’s the publicity video for those who are interested.

Conclusion

Singapore Airlines is now trialling priority security screening lanes for Suites, First Class and Solitaire PPS Club members at Changi Airport Terminal 3.

For now, this is limited to the cluster gates — where such a service will probably have the most impact — though it’ll be interesting to see whether it eventually expands to pier gates as well. I’ll reach out to SIA for a comment, and update this post when they reply.

In any case, Terminal 5 will offer centralised security when it eventually arrives in the mid-2030s, and at that point we will almost certainly see priority queues for premium cabin travellers and possibly elite frequent flyers.

Don’t see why it’ll cost much. They just do double entry points – one at each side before the entrance to security.

Actually, i appreciate individual gate screening rather than big chaotic central screening like most airport do, plus a pooling waiting/sitting area so call ‘gates’.
Especially when i am transiting at Changi, i can immediately relax down at lounges or do dining before walk to the gate.

Of course, some people on the other camp like the open concept more.

do note that supplementary Solitaire PPS members are not given the same privilege. they can’t use the priority security clearance. there’s a security guard standing there and he has a list of passengers that he is expecting. so if your name is not on that list, he will turn you away. if you say supplementary Solitaire PPS, he will also turn you away 🙂
