Is Singapore Airlines dropping First Class service to Jakarta?

The shortest First Class flight in the Singapore Airlines network is the 550-mile hop to Jakarta, where the actual flying time is often under 90 minutes.

Now, no one needs First Class on a route where you’re airborne for less than the runtime of an average movie. Even the meal service feels like a mad rush, compared to the leisurely pace you might be accustomed to on longer jaunts. That said, there’s clearly commercial demand for it in Jakarta, thanks to the inexplicable existence of a “sandwiched class” not affluent enough for private jets, but who wouldn’t be caught dead slumming it in Business Class.

Besides, if Singapore Airlines First Class is on your bucket list, then a First Class Saver award to Jakarta — priced at 32,000 KrisFlyer miles — is the most realistic option. The flight may be short, but you can still have a lot of fun in the pre-game segment, by visiting both First Class SilverKris Lounges in Terminals 2 and 3 and of course, The Private Room. I’ve done it before! 

Unfortunately, Singapore Airlines could be making some schedule adjustments for the upcoming Northern Winter season, which may result in First Class being axed from the Jakarta route entirely.

Singapore Airlines dropping First Class service to Jakarta?

For background, Singapore Airlines currently offers a four-seat First Class cabin on two of its nine daily flights to Jakarta, operated by Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Earlier this week, followers of the Indonesian miles and points blog PinterPoin noticed that from 25 October 2026 — the first day of the upcoming IATA Northern Winter season — Singapore Airlines appeared to be blocking all First Class Saver and Advantage awards. Only Access redemptions were available.

This “outage” lasts until 28 March 2027, the first day of the IATA Northern Summer season, when Saver and Advantage awards revert to normal availability once more.

A further check of the fare classes shows that of the two First Class fare buckets — A and F — the cheaper A bucket has been zeroed out, which is usually the harbinger of an equipment swap.

It’s important to emphasise that nothing has been confirmed yet. At the time of writing, both SQ950/953 and SQ964/965 are still scheduled to be operated with the Boeing 777-300ER. However, unless there’s some obvious reason I’m missing here, the signs don’t look good.

In fact, Singapore Airlines was originally planning to add an additional First Class service to Jakarta on SQ960/961 for the upcoming Northern Winter season. Unfortunately, that’s now been scrapped, as First Class passengers on these flights have started receiving emails informing them of the downgrade to Business Class. 

What if you’re downgraded?

If the equipment swap does happen, downgraded passengers will be refunded the difference in fare or miles. If you redeemed your ticket, you should expect a refund of 10,000 miles (First Saver > Business Saver) or 20,000 miles (First Advantage > Business Advantage).

If First Class is no longer in the picture, then you might even consider refunding your downgraded Business Class ticket (the fees should be waived) and hoping that it appears on Spontaneous Escapes. If you’re lucky, you could save 15,400 miles (First Saver > Business Promo).

In terms of further compensation, Singapore doesn’t have an equivalent of EC261, which provides compensation of up to 75% of the ticket price for downgrades. That said, it never hurts to ask politely — you might receive some miles as a gesture of goodwill, depending on your status.

It’s lonely for First Class at Terminal 2

If First Class flights to Jakarta are indeed discontinued, then the only Singapore Airlines First Class flight departing from Terminal 2 will be SQ632 to Tokyo Haneda. Tokyo Narita also has First Class service via SQ12, but that particular flight departs from Terminal 3, as an exception to the general rule.

That said, don’t expect to have the SilverKris Lounge all to yourself. Solitaire PPS Club members and their supplementary cardholders can also use these facilities, as well as Star Alliance First Class passengers.

Where might the B777-300ERs be headed?

I haven’t looked into this closely, but if Singapore Airlines does decide to pull the B777-300ERs from Jakarta, one of them might be heading for Europe to support the upcoming European capacity expansion.

As regrettable as the ongoing Middle East conflict is, Singapore Airlines is arguably one of the biggest beneficiaries, as jittery travellers ditch Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways to avoid routings that could become active combat zones based on an overnight tweet.

Why send the B777-300ER to Europe? While it only seats 11 more passengers than the A350-900LH, Singapore Airlines’ other long-haul workhorse, it offers a more premium-heavy configuration. Not only does it offer a First Class cabin, but 30% of seats are in a class above Economy (compared to 26% for the A350-900LH).

We also know that Singapore Airlines plans to retire one more B777-300ER by the end of FY2026/27 (i.e. 31 March 2027), the sixth such aircraft after 9V-SWA, -SWD, -SWE, -SWF and -SWN, so that could be another possible reason for the swap.

What’s the cheapest First Class redemption?

Assuming Jakarta is off the cards for now, the cheapest First Class redemption in the Singapore Airlines network becomes Hong Kong. At 47,500 miles for a First Class Saver award, it’s about 50% more expensive than Jakarta — but does get you an extra two hours or so to enjoy the flight. 

Moreover, unlike Jakarta, Hong Kong has its own SilverKris Lounge, with a dedicated First Class section. If you’re flying First Class from Hong Kong into Singapore, you can “double dip” by visiting the Hong Kong SilverKris Lounge on departure, and then the Singapore SilverKris Lounges and The Private Room on arrival.

The good news is that it’s fairly easy to find Saver awards on this route, even if you don’t have PPS Club status.

Otherwise, the next cheapest First Class destinations are those in China and India, though it’s nearly double what you’d pay for Jakarta.

Conclusion

Singapore Airlines has blocked First Class Saver and Advantage redemptions on the Jakarta route, and has also removed all but the most expensive First Class fares — behaviour which is consistent with a planned aircraft swap.

The affected period runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, so if you hold a First Class ticket, you might want to keep a close eye on your booking.

Given the short flight time, this was always more of a novelty redemption, though it was also a great opportunity for members with a smaller balance to get a little taste of the SIA First Class experience.
