Citi Rewards extends sign-up bonus, adds S$350 cashback option

New-to-bank Citi cardholders can choose from bonus miles or up to S$350 cashback up on approval for a Citi Rewards Card.

Since January 2019, Citibank has been offering a sign-up bonus on the Citi Rewards card, where cardholders can earn up to 22,800 miles by spending S$3,000 in the first 3 months of approval.

This offer has been periodically extended, and the most recent iteration lapsed on 30 June. Citibank has now renewed the offer, and added an alternative option of up to S$350 cashback.

Unfortunately, there’s a cap on the cashback offer, so decide quickly whether you want to hop on. If you want either of these offers, you cannot apply through SingSaver. You must apply via this link.

Offer 1: Get up to S$350 cashback with S$500 spending

This offer is available for applications submitted by 14 July 2020.

Cardholders who spend at least S$500 within the first month of approval and apply via SingPass MyInfo will receive up to S$350 cashback, broken down as follows.

  Award Cap
Spend ≥S$500 in first month of approval S$300 1,500
Apply via MyInfo S$50 500

Spending at least S$500 in the first month of approval earns you S$300 cashback.

📅 Do note that Citi has a rather generous interpretation of “first month”- it includes the period starting from approval date to the end of the calendar month after approval. For example, if you’re approved on 2 July, you’ll have until 31 August to meet the spend threshold.

This offer is limited to the first 1,500 eligible cardholders. Citi determines eligibility based on when approval was given. Therefore, assuming you get approved within the next couple of days, there’s no need to rush the spending.

However, do note that Citi is running this same promotion on its other credit cards too, and the cap is shared among the Citi Cash Back Mastercard, Citi Cash Back+ Mastercard, Citi Rewards Mastercard, and the Citi PremierMiles Card

On top of the S$300, Citibank will give a further S$50 cashback to the first 500 (out of the aforementioned 1,500) customers who apply via SingPass MyInfo.

Cashback gifts will be credited within 2 months from the date all the conditions are met. The full T&C of this offer can be read here

Offer 2: Get up to 22,800 miles with S$3,000 spending

This offer is available for applications submitted by 30 September 2020.

This is basically the same deal that Citibank has been running for the past few months, but still worth considering.

Cardholders who spend S$3,000 in the first 3 months after approval will receive 27,000 bonus ThankYou points (equivalent to 10,800 miles).

📅 Just like Offer 1, Citi has a generous definition of “the first 3 months after approval”- this includes the period from card approval to the end of the calendar month, plus three full calendar months after that. In other words, if you get approved on 2 July, you’ll have until 31 October to meet the spend threshold

Assuming you spend the S$3,000 on eligible 10X categories (and honestly, if you don’t, you’re using this card wrong), you’re looking at a total of 57,000 ThankYou points:

  • 3,000 base points
  • 27,000 bonus points for spending on 10X categories
  • 27,000 bonus points for hitting sign up bonus

This is a total of 22,800 miles.

The 27,000 bonus points will be credited within two calendar months of meeting the spending criteria. For example, if you hit it in the third month, you’ll receive the bonus points by the end of the fifth month.

What are eligible 10X categories?

Eligible 10X categories include all spending at online merchants (excluding travel), and offline spending at merchants with the following MCCs:

  • MCC 5311: Department Stores
  • MCC 5611: Men’s and Boy’s Clothing and Accessories Stores
  • MCC 5621: Women’s Ready to Wear Store
  • MCC 5631: Women’s Accessory and Specialty Stores
  • MCC 5641: Children’s and Infant’s Wear Stores
  • MCC 5651: Family Clothing Stores
  • MCC 5655: Sports and Riding Apparel Stores
  • MCC 5661: Shoe Stores
  • MCC 5691: Men’s and Women’s Clothing Stores
  • MCC 5699: Miscellaneous Apparel and Accessory Shops
  • MCC 5948: Luggage and Leather Good Stores

Remember: the cap on 10X points is S$1,000 per statement month, so you’ll need to spread out your spending over the qualifying period to maximize your total miles.

There is no cap on the number of cardholders who can receive this offer. The full T&C can be found here.

Why earn points with Citibank?

Citi points are one of the most useful points currencies in Singapore, thanks to the sheer number of transfer partners available.

Most banks offer just KrisFlyer, or at most, Asia Miles. Citi has 11 different transfer partners, including some with great sweet spots like Etihad Guest, British Airways Executive Club, and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles.

ThankYou points can be transferred to 11 different frequent flyer programs and 1 hotel partner at a 5:2 ratio.

Thank You points earned on the Citi Rewards card are valid 5 years from the date of card opening.

The downside is that Citi points do not pool. If you’ve accumulated points on both the Citi Rewards Visa and the Citi Rewards Mastercard, those will not be combined for the purpose of redemption, and you’ll have to pay two separate redemption fees (S$25 each).

Conclusion

This promotion just launched today, so I’d feel pretty confident of being in the first 1,500 if you apply right now.

However, if you’re reading this a few days later, you might want to play it safe and go for the bonus miles offer instead.

I’ve updated the credit card sign up bonus page to reflect this latest information.
