American Express Shop Small: Support local businesses and get S$15 back per card

Register your AMEX card and get S$5 back with S$10 spent at local businesses, up to 3X per card.

American Express has finally debuted its Shop Small initiative in Singapore, an initiative that encourages cardholders to support local businesses.

From 1-31 December 2020, cardholders can register for this AMEX Offer and receive up to S$15 back per card when they eat, drink and shop at participating local business across Singapore.

โ“ What are AMEX Offers?

AMEX Offers are opportunities to earn bonus miles or Membership Rewards points, or discounts in the form of statement credits. These are available to Platinum, True Cashback, and KrisFlyer cobrand cardholders, and can be found in the โ€œOffersโ€ section of the AMEX app or web portal.

Registration is required, and some offers may be targeted.

Cardholders will first need to register their cards via this link or through the AMEX app.  After registration, they will receive S$5 back each time they spend at least S$10 at participating local businesses, up to 3X per card.

If you have multiple American Express cards, you can register all of them to enjoy the offer as many times as you have cards. That said, I only saw the Shop Small Offer appear on my AMEX Platinum Charge; I’m not seeing it on my AMEX Platinum Reserve or AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend

There is no cap on the total number of eligible card registrations, but do note that registration is not open to Citibank-issued American Express cards (DBS and UOB are ok).

AMEX Shop Small Merchants

Where can you shop? A whole lot of places, including a few which probably shouldn’t fall under the small business category. Examples include:

  • Best Denki
  • Burger King
  • Guardian Pharmacies
  • McDonald’s
  • Popular Bookstores
  • Sephora
  • Starbucks
  • Tim Ho Wan
  • Watson’s

Do note that not every outlet may be participating, so make sure you check against the map

Yes sir, nothing better than the knowledge I’m helping the little guy by ordering a Big Mac.

The Shop Small promotion is only valid for in-store purchases; online transactions do not qualify. Statement credits should appear on your billing statement within 5 business days from qualifying spend, but may take up to 90 days form the offer end date. In my experience, AMEX Offers post as soon as the transaction does.

Conclusion

With the large number of merchants participating, this is basically a S$15 free credit per card. While I only received the offer on one card, do check out your AMEX Offers section and see if you can register multiple cards.

Tried searching around popular areas such as Orchard, Marina Bay and Harbourfront but didn’t get any results. I wonder if their definition of small businesses excludes branches in prime shopping areas.

If it doesn’t appear on your offers, or you have a bank issued (DBS, uob) amex

Just a clarification
Offer excludes Citi issued amex
Offer typically applies per card number – great for supplementaries (amex, DBS and uob). Manual link (above) comes in handy for supplementaries where the amex offers in online banking can be hit and miss

Seems to be only in Jurong and CCKang from the map???
