Kris+ offering 30% milesback with FairPrice Finest and Esso

Expired

From now till 3 April, get 30% milesback on FairPrice Finest and Esso transactions, or 0.95 cents per mile.

Kris+ has launched a new 30% milesback offer for payments with miles at FairPrice Finest and Esso Service Stations, which boosts the value per mile to 0.95 cents each.

This certainly isn’t a “must-grab” deal, but might be worth a thought for those with no upcoming travel plans, especially since Singapore Airlines will be expiring KrisFlyer miles once again from 31 July 2023.

Kris+ 30% milesback promotion

From 21 March to 3 April 2023, Kris+ users will get 30% milesback on all FairPrice Finest and Esso transactions made through the Kris+ app. This covers redeeming miles:

  • for petrol at Esso service stations or buying flash deals on the Kris+ app (they’re selling a S$50 voucher for S$47, which is eligible for milesback)
  • for FairPrice gift vouchers at customer service counters

There is no cap on the maximum milesback you can receive.

To illustrate how this works, suppose you spend 15,000 KrisPay miles at FairPrice Finest (S$100 value). You’ll receive an instant rebate of 4,500 miles, for a net outlay of 10,500 miles.

Payment 30% Rebate Net Outlay Value Per Mile
15,000 miles
(S$100)
4,500 miles 10,500 miles 0.95 cents
(S$100 / 10,500)

This yields a value of 0.95 cents per mile, instead of the usual 0.67 cents per mile.

How good is a 30% milesback offer? Well, we used to see 40% milesback offers regularly throughout 2020 and 2021, but 30% seems to be the new normal from 2022 onwards. The last time we saw a 40% milesback offer was a limited-time promotion just for Black Friday, and I think it’s safe to say that Kris+ is cutting back on the generosity.

How does this compare to other redemption options?

A value of 0.95 cents per mile is nowhere as good as redeeming flights, but it would be one of the better options for using miles on the ground. I’d much sooner choose this than spending KrisFlyer miles on KrisShop or Pelago, for example.

Options for Spending KrisFlyer Miles
Redemption Option Value per mile
โœˆ๏ธ Award flights 2-6 cents
๐Ÿ“ฑ Kris+ (with 30% milesback) 0.95 cents
0.67
cents
โœˆ๏ธ Pay for flights with miles 0.95 cents
๐Ÿš˜ KrisFlyer vRooms 0.8 cents
๐Ÿ›๏ธ KrisShop 0.8 cents
๐Ÿจ Shangri-La Golden Circle conversion 0.77 cents
๐Ÿฌ CapitaStar conversion 0.7 cents
๐ŸŽก Pelago 0.67 cents
๐Ÿ›’ LinkPoints conversion 0.65 cents
โ›ฝ Esso Smiles conversion 0.33- 0.67 cents

I wouldn’t advise transferring KrisFlyer miles to Kris+ just to take advantage of this offer (unless, as mentioned earlier, you have no upcoming travel plans and have one eye on 31 July 2023, when miles start expiring again).

However, if you have KrisPay miles already stuck in Kris+ due to referrals, promotions, or just sheer forgetfulness (e.g. forgetting to transfer miles to your KrisFlyer account within seven days of accrual), then this at least lets you get more than the usual 0.67 cents of value.

Earn KrisPay miles via Kris+

While spending KrisFlyer miles via Kris+ may not be for everyone, earning them definitely should be.

Kris+ now partners with more than 300 popular retailers such as Bottles & Bottles, Challenger and Harvey Norman. Members can earn up to 9 mpd at participating merchants, which is stackable with credit card miles for a total earn rate of 13 mpd.

Basically, all you do is:

  1. Scan the merchant’s Kris+ QR code
  2. Enter the amount to be paid, and press “Pay” to pay via Apple/Google Pay

Don’t forget to transfer any KrisPay miles you earn to KrisFlyer within 7 days of the transaction. Wait any longer, and they’ll be stuck in Kris+ forever (with a six month expiry, to boot).

In-app payments in Kris+ follow the underlying merchant’s regular MCC. In other words, simply use whatever credit card you’d normally use at that particular merchant.

The latest Kris+ offer gives 30% milesback on FairPrice Finest and Esso transactions, which works out to 0.95 cents per mile.

This is far from a screaming good deal, though I can see some people taking this opportunity to cash out miles they have stuck inside of Kris+, or burning a small number of soon-to-expire KrisFlyer miles.
