Turkish Airlines offering up to 40% off Economy Class award tickets

Book by 2 October 2024 and travel between November and March 2025 to save 30-40% off selected Turkish Airlines Economy Class awards.

Turkish Airlines has launched a new award sale for Miles&Smiles members that offers up to 40% off Economy Class redemptions, valid for tickets issued by 2 October 2024 and travelled by 31 March 2025.

Leaving aside the fact that only Economy Class awards are discounted, Turkish Miles&Smiles simply isn’t the same programme it used to be, following its massive devaluation in February 2024. Not only have award prices been hiked, but itineraries are now priced on a segment-by-segment basis, which means transiting through Istanbul โ€” as most flights will require โ€”will be significantly more expensive.

All this to say you might find some value, but these sales are a lot less exciting than they were a year ago.

Turkish Airlines Award Sale

Here’s the key details of Turkish Airlines’ Miles&Smiles award sale:

Notice how Singapore (or any other Southeast Asian city, for that matter) is not on the list, which means you can enjoy the discount when flying from one of the above cities to Singapore, but not the other way round.

The discount will be automatically reflected when you search for awards on the Turkish Airlines website. For example, a one-way Economy Class award from Dublin to Singapore normally costs 50,000 miles, which is reduced to 35,000 miles after a 30% discount (the less we talk about that ridiculous Business Class pricing the better!).

Award tickets booked under this promotion can be changed for a US$25 fee (only dates can be changed, not routings). Tickets can also be cancelled and miles refunded for a US$25 fee.

Is it worth it?

Turkish Airlines B737-8 Max Economy Class

Saving 30-40% off awards would have been fantastic in the past, but Miles&Smiles is a lot less exciting these days.

Here’s the revised award chart applicable to Turkish Airlines awards.

Remember: Turkish Miles&Smiles now uses segment-by-segment pricing for Turkish Airlines flights connecting in Turkey. For example, a Turkish Airlines award ticket from Dubai to London is the sum of:

  • an individual Dubai to Istanbul award
  • an individual Istanbul to London award

With that in mind, here’s how much a one-way award to/from Singapore with transit in Istanbul would cost.

โœˆ๏ธ One-way Award Pricing to/from Singapore

North America 75K

South America 85K

Using Europe as an example, the discounted cost of 31,500 to 35,000 miles is still more expensive than what a KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes award would cost (29,400 miles), and keep in mind that Turkish Airlines has fuel surcharges, while Singapore Airlines does not.

That said, Turkish Airlines has a much bigger route network than Singapore Airlines, and tickets booked under this promotion can still be refunded, unlike Spontaneous Escapes. More importantly, they allow for travel over a five-month period, whereas Spontaneous Escapes requires you to fly in the following month.

So maybe there are situations where someone could find this useful for settling their inbound flight to Singapore, but the appeal would be niche.

Conclusion

Turkish Airlines A350

Turkish Airlines is now offering 30-40% off Economy Class awards for travel between November 2024 and March 2025. While it’s not available for outbound flights from Singapore, you can enjoy the discount on inbound flights to Singapore.

The thing is, Miles&Smiles has been nerfed so badly that even a 30-40% discount can’t completely undo the damage. That’s not to say the sale is completely worthless, but it’s a lot harder to find value compared to before.

That said, if you don’t mind flying Economy (or can upgrade yourself ala Eric Adams), then by all means have a look.
