Malaysia Airlines offering 50% bonus elite miles for London flights

Quicker elite status, but orphan miles ahoy.

Previously, Malaysia Airlines were offering double elite miles when you flew with them to London in November 2017. Now, they’re back with another promotion where you can earn a 50% elite miles bonus when flying with Malaysia Airlines to London in economy class. Note that you’ll only be earning extra elite miles and not award miles.

Malaysia Airlines has included an infographic on the amount of miles that you’ll be earning via this promotion. Note that figures represent one-way mileage earnings.

Also, here’s the required amount of mileage you would need before hitting status in the Enrich program :

  • Silver (oneworld Ruby) : 25,000 Elite Miles
  • Gold (oneworld Sapphire) : 50,000 Elite Miles
  • Platinum (oneworld Emerald) : 100,000 Elite Miles

Once you’ve reached Enrich Silver (oneworld Ruby), you’ll be eligible for a 25% bonus on redeemable miles when flying with Malaysia Airlines(MH) and codeshare flights marketed by MH. You would also be eligible to use the business class check in counters when flying on oneworld airlines even when travelling in economy and also be able to board ahead of other passengers. Also you will receive an additional 5kg of baggage allowance when flying on MH.

In addition to the perks accorded to Silver members, Gold members receive business class lounge access even when flying on economy class, increased baggage allowance across the oneworld alliance and priority baggage handling. Oh and you’ll also get a dedicated hotline for your needs.

As a Platinum member, in addition to the perks you get as a Gold member, you’ll be accorded with a higher 30% bonus redeemable miles accrual rate, first class lounge access in the oneworld network as well as even more baggage allowance. Also, being a Platinum member with Enrich would also give you the opportunity to give your spouse a complimentary Platinum membership! That’s an awesome perk in my opinion.

Malaysia Airlines operates both the A350 and A380 to London at the moment (although reports say they’re taking the A380 off the route) so you’d get the chance to sample their spanking new A350 aircraft. Albeit in economy class.

Fares start from S$1,007 return

As different fares get you different amount of miles earned (duh), here’s a list of the cost of a return ticket and the amount of miles you would earn from Kuala Lumpur to London (note that SIN-KUL will not get you the bonus miles) :

  • Economy Promo (Q) : SGD 1007.80 – 4,942 Elite Miles
  • Economy Smart (V) SGD 1,307.80 – 19,762 Elite Miles
  • Economy Flex (H) SGD 2,057.80 – 29,644 Elite Miles
These fares were sourced out on Malaysia Airlines website and are accurate as of 5 Feb 2018 for a departure time frame in March 2018

So with 2 return trips on Economy (V) and Economy (H), you’re already Enrich Gold after forking out SGD3365.60. If you pay these fares with the DBS Altitude credit card, you’ll be also receiving back approximately 9,000 miles from the air fare charged.

Worth it for status?

Well, honestly the previous promotion would have been cheaper for you to earn elite status with MH but at least MH is generous enough to run this promotion again for bonus elite miles. Keep in mind you’ll be left with orphaned Enrich miles and that the only thing you’ll be getting out from this is elite status. Those orphaned Enrich miles won’t do you much good either, now that MH has gutted its FFP and introduced dynamic pricing.

All things considered, if you have frequent trips coming up on oneworld airlines in economy and don’t currently hold status but don’t mind shelling out some cash (and time), this promotion with MH might suit you. You could still credit your flights to another program but with the physical Gold card from Enrich, you’ll still be eligible to enter the business class lounges (from my understanding).

Note that to qualify for this promotion, your ticket must be booked with Malaysia Airlines by 12 February 2018 and travel must be completed by 21 March 2018. This promotion is only valid on flight numbers MH001, MH002, MH003 and MH004, basically their twice daily services to London.

just take norwegian from singapore direct to london…its like 500sgd return

Sambal Sotong

That’s FROM 500sgd return. Just did a search and the cheapest possible return flight for the whole of 2018 is 549sgd, fly out 12 march and fly back 14 March. Many seats esp for summer months are actually much more expensive than legacy carriers- and this is all before add on fees.
