Singapore Airlines releases a list of discounted KrisFlyer redemption Saver awards to select destinations every month called โSpontaneous Escapesโ. These discounted Saver awards are going at a 30% discount compared to their normal redemption prices.
Singapore Airlines has just released the list for travel in August 2018ย and youโll need to book these discounted award ticketsย by 31 July 2018ย and travel betweenย 1 August 2018 โ 30 August 2018.ย Note that there are several blackout dates which are stated on the website and flights on these dates will price out at the normal redemption rates.
A reminder thatย tickets issued under the Spontaneous Escapes promotion are non-changeable and cannot be cancelled as well. This is unlike regular award tickets which at least allow you to refund your booking for a fee. Thus, your travel plans have to be very firm before taking advantage of this promotion (or you should buy aย travel insurance policy that covers miles and points bookings).
Kuala Lumpur appears for the first time, Dusseldorf is gone and 40% off select Economy Saver awards!
The list of available destinations for August 2018 list is decent but not as good as what was offered in July 2018. As part of KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes first anniversary, Economy Saver awards to Bangkok, Yangon andย Phnom Penh are going at a 40% discount instead of your usual 30% discount. While we still don’t really advocate using your miles for Economy Class redemption tickets, at 7,500 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class to Bangkok, there certainly is some great value to be had with a 40% discount.
Kuala Lumpur makes its inaugural appearance in the Spontaneous Escapes list and if you’re heading over to Kuala Lumpur for a mattress run in August 2018, an Economy Class redemption with KrisFlyer would make much more sense than with Avios on Malaysia Airlines as you’ll be paying a much lower tax amount when redeeming on Singapore Airlines. The downside is that SQ has only made 1 flight available for redemption under Spontaneous Escapes rates both ways and it departs Singapore in the late afternoon and Kuala Lumpur in the morning, hardly optimal for a nice weekend getaway.
For those of you who have yet to experience the brand new regional Business Class product and don’t have the time to head to Japan or Perth, Bangkok is once again available for booking under Spontaneous Escapes rates and you would want to be booking SQ982 from Singapore and SQ983 from Bangkok to fly on the Boeing 787-10 Dreamlinerย at a cheaper redemption award price.
Further up North, Beijing and Shanghai makes its return to the KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes list alongside Fukuoka, Seoul and Nagoya. Sadly, Hong Kong has disappeared from the list for August 2018.ย If you wish to experience the new Regional Business Class on a longer flight, you can opt to fly to Nagoya as SQ672/SQ671 are being operated with the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner in August 2018. Seoul is once again being offered but the first half of August 2018 is excluded for the Spontaneous Escapes promotion.
Johannesburg is back in August 2018 and at 31,500 KrisFlyer miles one-way on a Business Class flight redemption for a 10 hour flight, that’s certainly tremendous value for this flight. Flights to Johannesburg are operated with the A350-900 featuring the 2013 Business Class product. You can check out our updated seat and fleet guide here to see which seats you will be getting on your flight.ย
Going Down Under, you will only be able to obtain Spontaneous Escapes rates for Economy Class redemption tickets for flights to Perth. Flights to Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Wellington are available in both Economy Class and Business Class at Spontaneous Escapes rates. Sadly, Singapore Airlines has not made the flight to Sydney which is being served with the new A380 available for booking under KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes rates this time around but it was being offered in previous editions of KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes.ย
There are no flights to Europe or North America under Spontaneous Escapes rates for August 2018.
For flights on SilkAir, Business Class awards are sadly not available and you are only able to redeem for Economy Class with SilkAir under KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escape rates.
Our picks
Instead of “copy pasting” the whole chart as we have previously done in previous posts for the KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes, we’ll be picking some destinations which we feel are of great value in this edition of the KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes promotion. You can view the full list of destinations on offer over on the dedicated KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes website.
- Kuala Lumpur
- Bangkok
- Beijing & Shanghai
- Nagoya – as its being served by the 787-10 come August 2018
- Seoul
- Johannesburg
- Wellington
Concluding Thoughts
The list of destinations on offer in August 2018 is still pretty great, especially if you are looking for a quick getaway to destinations such as Bangkok. While I’m a little sad that my favourite destination of Dusseldorf is missing from the list, I will be awaiting its return in the September 2018 edition of the KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes promotion.
