AMEX Platinum Charge MGM gift boosted to 80K MR points

Last week, AMEX launched a campaign which awards Platinum Charge cardholders 8,000 MR points (equivalent to 5,000 miles) for uploading a photo of their card on Instagram.

That’s a great deal in and of itself, but AMEX has thrown in something extra. Here’s the automatic reply that comes after you submit the screenshot of your Instagram post.

To summarize, all Platinum Charge cardholders who participate in the Instagram contest will be eligible for an upsized MGM gift from now till 31 Aug 2019. Instead of the regular 40,000 MR points, you’ll get 80,000 MR points (50,000 miles) for every friend you refer (your friend still gets the regular 40,000 points).

Here’s a reminder of how the MGM offer works:

Referees who apply through MGM will still be eligible for the regular sign up bonus of 75,000 MR points when they spend $20K within the first 3 months of approval. The $5K spending requirement for MGM will “double count” towards the $20K threshold, meaning you’ll get:

• 40,000 bonus MR points from the MGM offer
• 75,000 bonus MR points from the $20K sign up bonus offer
• 25,000 base MR points from regular spending

This is a total of 140,000 MR points, or 87,500 miles. AMEX Membership Rewards points can be transferred to the following frequent flyer programs:

The MGM program is only available for applications which are processed online, which means that the person you refer must earn at least $150K. If you’re below this threshold and still want to apply based on consideration of other assets, your best bet is to try an offline application with a representative who can help appeal your case.

Conclusion

80,000 MR points (50,000 miles) for referring a friend is a very rich offer, so if you know a friend who’s been on the fence about applying, now’s the time to remind them.

If you haven’t submitted your modern art masterpiece yet for the Instagram competition, you have until 31 July to do so. It’s a couple minutes’ work for 5,000 miles; there’s really no reason not to.
