ShopBack GO offering 50% cashback on selected restaurants (available for takeaways)

Dining-in won't be an option from tomorrow, but you can still save on takeaways.

From 7 April to 4 May, all restaurants will be required to cease dining-in as part of the circuit breaker measures to counter the Covid-19 spread. During this time, they’ll only be permitted to offer takeaway or delivery.

The bright side is that ShopBack GO is offering up to 50% cashback (capped at S$15) on selected restaurants, which also applies to takeaway orders.

What is ShopBack GO?
ShopBack Go - Go eat, get Cashback.ShopBack GO is an offline cashback platform which lets you earn cashback when you dine or shop at 1,000+ participating merchants. Simply link your Mastercard/Visa to the ShopBack app and pay with it like you normally would. You’ll earn the regular miles on your credit card, plus bonus cashback from ShopBack

You can browse the merchant list in the ShopBack app, and filter by restaurants which offer takeaway. Most offers require you to do a manual boost (just tap the big “boost” button), so be sure to do so before making payment.

Here’s the list of merchants offering boosted cashback during the promotion period (subject to the relevant cap):

What card should I use?

Remember that with ShopBack GO, you don’t pay through the ShopBack app- instead, you swipe or tap your card as you normally would for a regular transaction.

This means you shouldn’t be asking “what’s the best card to use with ShopBack GO?”, but rather “what’s the best card for dining?”

Card Dining MPD Remarks
UOB Preferred Platinum Visa 4.0 Only where Paywave is accepted, capped at S$1,110 per month
UOB Lady’s Card 4.0 Select dining as your quarterly 10X category, capped at S$1K per month
UOB Lady’s Solitaire Card 4.0 Select dining as your quarterly 10X category, capped at S$3K per month
KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card 3.0 Min S$500 spend on SIA-group per member year
HSBC Revolution 2.0
OCBC VOYAGE 1.6

Only Visa or Mastercard cards can be linked with ShopBack GO, so you can’t use the UOB Preferred Platinum AMEX even if you have it. It makes no difference whether you pay with the physical card, or with the same card loaded on a mobile wallet like Google or Apple Pay.

Important note: ShopBack has mentioned that UOB Mastercards using mobile payment methods such as Apple Pay will not track properly. Be sure to use the physical card in this case

Conclusion

The circuit breaker means you won’t be able to use dining discounts like Love Dining or The Entertainer, which are for dine-in only. However, you’ll at least be able to snag some deals through platforms like ShopBack GO, and Burpple Beyond (as per The Shutterwhale, Burpple Beyond’s 1-for-1 deals will be extended to takeaways soon).

Remember to observe safe distancing while waiting for your order to be prepared, and if you’re even feeling the slightest bit ill, forget the takeaway and order in instead.
