SIA restores A380 to Frankfurt, adds widebodies to Cairns, direct flights to Barcelona and more

SIA has unveiled a packed Northern Summer schedule, which brings back another A380 and restores many services to pre-pandemic levels (or more).

Singapore Airlines has announced its schedule for the 2024 Northern Summer Season, which runs from 31 March to 26 October 2024.

Highlights include the restoration of A380 services to Frankfurt, the deployment of widebody A350-900s to Cairns and Male, reinstating direct flights to Barcelona, and increasing flight frequencies to pre-pandemic levels (or more) across multiple destinations including Beijing, Copenhagen, Dubai, Melbourne, Perth, Shanghai, Tokyo-Haneda and Houston.

No doubt the airline is in a bullish mood, having recently posted the highest net profit in its 76-year history, and amidst all this expansion there can only be one pertinent question:

SIA’s Northern Summer Season: Highlights

Singapore Airlines’ 2024 Northern Summer Season announcement is a lengthy document spanning 14 pages, so I’m going to zoom in on the highlights and provide the rest in an appendix.

Here’s what I found the most interesting:

💬 Expert Analysis

To spare you my amateurish insights, I’ve got some quotes from someone who actually knows what he’s talking about: Brendan Sobie, Founder of Sobie Aviation

Here’s his take on the announcements:

  • On widebodies to Cairns: Australian Airlines (the old leisure airline subsidiary of Qantas) previously deployed a widebody on Cairns <> Singapore until around 2006 when Qantas shut the airline down and axed the route, so it’s not quite 20 years without a widebody. And during the pandemic, Singapore Airlines did operate an A350-900 preighter to Cairns
  • On added capacity to Male during the monsoon: The monsoon season isn’t as severe as you might think, and while some Singapore residents may avoid the Maldives during summer, it’s peak period for connecting traffic. Demand for flights to the Maldives is booming, so Singapore Airlines really needs to add capacity here, and the daytime flight connects particularly well to Australia. Moreover, Singapore Airlines needs to free up some B737-8 capacity from longer routes (including Cairns) for short haul increases, given the relatively small size of the B737-8 fleet
  • Overall thoughts: Singapore Airlines Group full service should be back to pre-COVID levels in terms of departures from SIN by August 2024. Group seat capacity including Scoot should be fully restored but network ASKs may be slightly short particularly when including fifth freedom flights that aren’t resuming (e.g. Hong Kong to San Francisco). Network ASKs will probably not return to pre-COVID levels until the B777-9s are finally delivered. While most routes are fully restored and some will be above pre-COVID levels (e.g. Dubai), you also have pre-COVID routes that were cut (e.g. Dusseldorf) and other routes still not fully restored.

Barcelona: Direct flights restored

Direct flights to Barcelona will be restored

SIA will restore direct flights to Barcelona from 2 June 2024 via a twice-weekly service on SQ388/387.  Barcelona is currently served via Milan on SQ378/377, which will be reduced from five-weekly to three-weekly come 4 June 2024.

Incidentally, the fifth-freedom flight between Milan and Barcelona is one of the more unique routes to try Singapore Airlines Business Class. With a blocked flight time of 1h 40 mins, you won’t get a full meal service (sandwich only), but the full drinks selection is yours to indulge in, and you get a very comfortable seat. It’s probably as good as intra-Europe Business Class gets!

Cairns: SIA widebodies for the first time in 20 years

Cairns gets widebody service from SIA for the first time in more than 20 years

SIA will deploy an A350-900MH aircraft on the Cairns route from 31 March 2024, marking the first time in more than 20 years that an SIA widebody aircraft has been used on this route. With the increase in capacity, SIA will also cut the frequency to a four-times weekly service, instead of the current five-times.

✈️ 31 March 2024 to 25 October 2024
Flight Timings Frequency A/C
SQ203 (SIN-CNS) Dep: 0840
Arr: 1700
Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun A350-900MH
SQ204 (CNS-SIN) Dep: 1815
Arr: 2240
Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun A350-900MH

It’s certainly going to be a comfort upgrade for passengers regardless of cabin, compared to the B737-8 currently deployed on this route. Business Class passengers can look forward to all-aisle access with the 2018 Regional Business Class seat, and Economy Class passengers will enjoy more seat pitch and width.

Frankfurt: A380 service restored

The A380 is back in town for Frankfurt

Frankfurt lost the A380 in May 2023, when SQ26/25 was downgauged to a B777-300ER. While the latter has a First Class cabin, it’s certainly no comparison with Suites!

The good news is that SIA will restore the A380 on the Frankfurt route from 31 March 2024, replacing the A350-900LH on the SQ326/325 service.

Arr: 1740

SQ325 (FRA-SIN) Dep: 2200

Daily A380

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean the return of Suites to New York JFK; The SQ26/25 route will still be operated by a B777-300ER.

With Tokyo-Narita losing the A380 from 31 March 2024, this suggests that 9V-SKP, the 12th and final A380 to be refit to the latest cabin products, will return for the Northern Summer season to enable a daily A380 service (thanks @Sean for pointing that out). This aircraft last flew in July 2022, and since then has been in the hangar ever since.

Male: Upgauging to A350-900MH

Widebody flights to the Maldives means more award space

SIA will upgauge the seven-times weekly service to Male (SQ432/431) from a B737-8 to an A350-900MH from 31 March 2024, to meet strong demand for air travel.

✈️ 31 March 2024 to 26 October 2024

SQ431 (MLE-SIN) Dep: 1255

Daily A350-900MH

That said, I find this a bit odd: isn’t the monsoon season from May to November? I can’t imagine many people would want to travel during this period, so I’m quite certain I’m missing something here.

Tokyo-Haneda: Four daily flights coming

Tokoy-Haneda will increase to 4X daily

Tokyo remains one of the hardest routes to redeem awards for at the moment, with Japan leisure and business travel back to full swing.

From 1 October 2023, SIA will add a third daily service to Tokyo-Haneda on SQ632/633, with a fourth daily service on SQ630/639 coming from 1 September 2024. This will restore Tokyo-Haneda to four-times daily, the same as pre-pandemic.

Conclusion

Singapore Airlines has big plans for the Northern Summer season, with services to many destinations returning to or exceeding pre-pandemic levels. Passengers to Frankfurt can also look forward to Suites once more, while those to Cairns and the Maldives will have much more comfortable widebody aircraft instead of the cramped B737-8s.

I’m slightly surprised we haven’t heard any news about new destinations just yet, with rumours suggesting the airline would restore one of its pre-pandemic European destinations (Brussels, Dusseldorf, Stockholm; yes, I’m aware Brussels never actually happened!), or add non-stop flights to Boston/Chicago (which it was reportedly considering before COVID hit).

The schedule on Milan is a bit misleading. SIN-MXP is already daily. I think they just made minor adjustments because some of the MXP-BCN fligths are removed?

Matrix.RX1

I fly that route every month. Daily MXP has been ongoing for ages, but the SQxxx flight code changes often and in the past it was to denote a continuation to BCN or not.

Matrix.RX1

I fly that route every month and daily MXP has been ongoing for ages. It has however two different codes, most often SQ377 and then at times also SQ379. My understanding is that in the past the different flight number was to denote if the flight continued to BCN or not.

With so much demand, surely they can add more A380s to Japan.

AnnualDegree99

Can’t exactly walk to FairPrice to buy a few new ones either

J j

I mean there’s always 9V-SKP which has been sitting around wrapped up…

Scott

Any idea when these direct to Barcelona flights will appear for bookings?

Matrix.RX1

btw. according to a well informed Italian aviation forum (lots of MXP/LIN employees posting anonymously), SQ was supposed to have BCN direct already from the start of the summer in Europe.

Tony

Seems a significant rise in capacity and probably will have to ramp up hiring and training for additional flights as I could see it mostly for next year’s plan.

Sean

“Since no other route is losing an A380, this almost certainly means that 9V-SKP, the 12th and final A380 to be refit to the latest cabin products, will return for the Northern Summer season.”

Isn’t NRT losing A380 on SQ638/637? Last flight pair on 30/31 March 2024. Unless they plan to extend A380 on the route and haven’t updated GDS.

Even if SKP returns, they’ll still need a 2nd A380 to support the daily FRA flights.

Sean

Yeah! Was hoping they’ll keep the A380 on NRT for at least 1 more month 😦

Abc

If you’re reading this SQ, please bring back SQ288. Would be nice to have an overnight option again from SYD – between a non stop flight landing 3am or a quirky stopover in Canberra, I would preferred the stopover…

Andy

I second this! It was a great route.

RonNews

Hi, on a separate note …. anyone encountered problem with Alaska Mileage Plan recently? Seems only showing awards on Malaysia Airlines.

Gordon

I do wish they finally start the SQ flight to Brussels! Many diplomats like me would appreciate that!

Speedybird

Seems like TFU (chengdu) has been suspended but not announced.
