KIX Lounge Premium Review: Surprisingly good for a common lounge

The KIX Lounge Premium is surprisingly good for a common lounge — an uncrowded space with an elevated selection of F&B.

Kansai Airport, the main international gateway to Osaka, completed a major, multi-year renovation of Terminal 1 in March 2025, aimed at modernising passenger facilities and streamlining the departure experience.

As part of the upgrade, the airport opened two new common lounges — KIX Lounge Premium and KIX Lounge Kansai — which replaced the existing airline-operated ones (indeed, JAL shut down its Sakura Lounge the day these opened).

The KIX Lounge Premium is the more upscale of the two, positioned as a quieter, more exclusive alternative to the larger and busier KIX Lounge Kansai. It is primarily reserved for First Class passengers (though I can’t think of many airlines which offer First Class from Osaka) and top-tier elites, though some airlines extend access to their Business Class passengers too.

I had a chance to visit this lounge recently, and was thoroughly impressed.

👍 The Good 👎 The Bad
  • The quietest and most private of all the common lounges at KIX
  • Upgraded F&B, including an a la carte menu, real champagne, cocktail bar and barista service
  • Shower rooms are rather average

Opening Hours & Access

The KIX Lounge Premium and KIX Lounge Kansai are co-located in Kansai’s main terminal, just past the duty-free gauntlet.

Both lounges are located up one floor from the departures concourse, with plenty of signage pointing the way.

These lounges are strictly for airline passengers, and third-party lounge memberships are not welcome, as the sign at the top of the escalator reminds you. If you’re toting a Priority Pass or Dragon Pass, your destination is the rather mediocre KIX North Lounge or KIX South Lounge at opposite ends of the terminal.

And don’t you forget it!

Like I said earlier, the two lounges have quite different target audiences, which is also reflected in their size and capacity.

Lounge Space Capacity
KIX Lounge Premium 800 sqm 143 seats
KIX Lounge Kansai 2,970 sqm 658 seats

The higher capacity KIX Lounge Kansai is meant to be a “mass market” lounge for regular Business Class passengers and frequent flyers. This is the lounge that Singapore Airlines sends its PPS Club, KrisFlyer Elite Gold and Business Class passengers to.

KIX Lounge Premium is smaller, but offers a more upscale experience. This is the lounge used by Singapore Airlines Solitaire PPS Club members, Cathay Pacific Diamond and oneworld Emerald members, ANA Million Miler and Diamond Service members, and Japan Airlines Diamond and oneworld Emerald members. Surprisingly, Japan Airlines also sends its Business Class passengers here, which is a nice touch.

Lounge Overview

KIX Lounge Premium reception

The KIX Lounge Premium is open from 6.30 a.m to 12.30 a.m daily. I entered the lounge around 8.30 a.m, and while it was moderately full at first, it quickly emptied out over the next hour.

Just beyond the entrance is a bank of free luggage lockers, each large enough to store a carry-on bag (on its side).

On the other side is The Oasis, a bank of six recliners and ottomans for those who want to get a bit of shut-eye.

Further in, the lounge opens up into two halves, creating a more spacious feel, with armchair seating on one side (also known as The Terrace) and table seating on the other (called, somewhat imaginatively, The Dining).

There are also a few communal tables in the middle of the lounge, ideal for solo travellers or anyone who needs extra table-top space.

At the rear of the lounge is The Nest, with four semi-private seating booths. I wouldn’t quite call them productivity pods because the table is too small for working, but it’s a good place to park yourself if you want more privacy. A massage chair is also available.

This is where the lounge’s bar is located, with barista and bartender service throughout the day.

Two soundproof phone rooms are available for taking calls or video conferencing, with power outlets built into the table.

Food & Beverage

KIX Lounge Premium buffet

The KIX Lounge Premium offers a fairly substantial buffet, and certainly one of the better ones I’ve had in a common lounge.

Hot items included hash browns, fried chicken, scrambled eggs, sausages and roast vegetables. There was also miso soup and beef curry.

Perhaps the coolest feature of all was this automatic rice dispensing machine. No more reaching into a communal tub and scooping— just choose your portion size and out it comes!

Cold options included a salad bar, cakes, pork cutlet sandwiches, breads and various pinchos such as prosciutto-wrapped orange, smoked salmon and cheese-filled meat terrine.

In addition to this, a small number of made-to-order items could be ordered through the QR codes on the tables, adding a more restaurant-style element to the dining experience.

I had the chirashi bowl and some udon noodles, both of which were great.

In terms of beverages, there was a soda dispenser and coffee machine (though barista coffee is available at the bar), various teas, liquors, and self-pouring beer machines.

I discovered this amazing non-alcoholic drink called Limmo, which brands itself as “the best lemonade in the world”, with multiple accolades to prove it. Add some sparkling water to this and you’re in flavourtown.

Another highlight of this lounge is that it offers real champagne (skip the cava at the buffet!), a relatively rare perk for a contract lounge. This is a very decent Jean Desentes Cuvée Prestige Brut Champagne, which the lounge has presumably ordered in sufficient quantity to put its own logo on the label.

Interesting-looking cocktails were also listed, though it was too early to request them (and if you know the Japanese, you’ll know they’re very strict about enforcing timings).

Wi-Fi & Power

The lounge’s dedicated Wi-Fi network was lightning fast, clocking 155 Mbps down and 128 Mbps up.

Power outlets, USB-A and USB-C ports were available throughout the lounge, built into tabletops and nestled between seats. However, the outlets are Japanese-style, so you’ll need to bring an adapter to use them.

Toilets & Showers

KIX Lounge Premium shower

The KIX Lounge Premium has two shower rooms, available from 6.30 a.m to 11.30 p.m. You’ll need to get an access card from the front desk.

These are functional, if unremarkable. Each has an extended vanity with a dressing table area, as well as a hand-held shower. Water pressure was very good, and ReEMOTION bath amenities were provided.

These rooms do not have attached toilets — and indeed, a sign warns against using them as such — but the restrooms are just outside.

Conclusion

The KIX Lounge Premium is definitely one of the nicer common lounges I’ve visited. The F&B quality was impressive, and it’s a meaningful step up from the mediocre generic offerings you usually find in shared lounges.

While it doesn’t quite rival a flagship airline-operated First Class lounge —particularly when it comes to showers and overall sense of luxury— it still delivers a comfortable, well-designed space with enough premium touches to justify its positioning.

However, this lounge is off-limits to all Singapore Airlines passengers, except those with Solitaire PPS Club status. Your odds of access are better with other airlines, in particular Japan Airlines, where Business Class passengers are invited too.
