KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes for August 2019 announced

Spontaneous Escapes for August 2019 are out, with 30% off selected Singapore Airlines and SilkAir awards.

KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes for August 2019 have been announced, with 30% off selected Singapore Airlines and SilkAir flights.

Click here to view this month’s Spontaneous Escapes

All Spontaneous Escape awards must be booked and ticketed by 31 July 2019 and are for travel between 1-31 August 2019 (both dates inclusive, blackout dates apply). This gives you 16 days to book, slightly more generous than the historical 14 day average we’ve seen.

Ground Rules of Spontaneous Escapes

  • Tickets cannot be changed or cancelled. Be sure about your travel plans or buy a travel insurance policy that covers miles bookings
  • Tickets must be booked online; no phone bookings are permitted
  • Cannot be used in conjunction with the $100 stopover trick
  • Discounts may apply in one direction only e.g. SIN-BKK may be on discount but BKK-SIN may not. Be sure to read the offers carefully
  • You must ticket your award during the promotion period. If your waitlist clears after the promotion period ends, you’ll pay the regular price
  • Blackout dates apply. If you’re not seeing discounts, this may be why
  • Your travel must be completed within the Spontaneous Escapes promotion period to qualify. For example, if you fly on the last day of the month but land on the first day of the following month, no discount applies
  • Remember that the discount will only appear once you’ve clicked on the selected award

33 destinations on offer for August 2019

Average does not include Feb-19, which featured 3 US destinations announced in Dec-18’s Spontaneous Escapes

August 2019 features 33 destinations in total (I count Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita as 2 separate destinations), which is slightly smaller compared to previous months.

What’s good this month?

It’s relatively slim pickings for August 2019, compared to some of the previous Spontaneous Escapes we have seen. However, the following options caught my eye:

Frankfurt in Business Class

As I’ve noted in my historical Spontaneous Escape analysis, Europe hardly appears, much less Europe in Business Class.

That’s why it’s  great to see Frankfurt popping up this time round, with SIN-FRA Business Class seats on SQ326 available at just 64.4K miles. Note that this is only available one-way (i.e. FRA-SIN will be regular price), and on one of the two daily flights (i.e. SQ26 is not available).

SQ326 is served by a B777-300ER, which means you’ll get to experience a very comfortable 2013 Business Class seat for the 13h 45 minutes flight time.

Enjoy Singapore Airline’s 2013 Business Class seat on B77W flights to Frankfurt

What I was surprised to see was that Business Saver award space is actually really good throughout August. I don’t know if it’ll stay that way, however, so you’d best get booking soon. Even if you’re not thinking of going to Frankfurt, it can be a useful staging point to connect to the rest of Europe.

Bangkok, why not

There’s plenty of flights to Bangkok available and this is a route that lets you try the 2018 Regional Business Class on not one, not two but three daily flights (SQ970, SQ978, SQ982 to BKK, SQ973, SQ981 and SQ983 to SIN).

Catch Singapore Airlines’ 2018 Regional Business Class seat to Bangkok on three daily flights for just 15.05K miles

This is an excellent product for such a short flight, as I reviewed recently. Sure, redeeming miles for short haul premium cabins may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want to treat yourself, you could do worse with 15.05K miles one-way.

Latest Business Class seats to Shanghai

If you’ve been eyeing Singapore Airline’s latest A380 cabin products, the only destination that has them this month is Shanghai (SQ830/833). 27.3K miles for a 5.5 hour flight may not be the best deal in the world, but when the seat is this good it’s hard to argue.

Singapore Airlines’ latest A380 Business Class

Fly Singapore Airlines to Phuket

This is more for novelty than value, but SIA recently started operating some of SilkAir’s Phuket routes due to capacity shortages on the SilkAir side. From July to October 2019, SQ992/993 replaces MI760/749, leaving SIN at 0950 and arriving in HKT at 1045.

The 2009 Regional Business Class seat you can expect to find on the B777-200

The flight is operated by a B777-200, which means you’ll have to make do with Singapore Airlines’ angled flat 2009 Regional Business Class seat. But hey, when the alternative is a narrowbody jet with recliner seats…

Don’t bother with Premium Economy

Delhi, Mumbai, Seoul, Tokyo and Los Angeles are available for Premium Economy redemptions, but it’s not a good idea to use your miles for those, and Spontaneous Escapes don’t do anything to change that. You’re better off saving up a little bit more for a Business Class Spontaneous Escape, given the big gap in comfort and small gap in miles.

Conclusion

Spontaneous Escapes are a great way of stretching your miles, especially if you’re traveling with your family. Remember to ticket your awards before 31 July!

Correct me if I’m wrong, the warmer countries tend to be featured while countries experiencing cold winter tends to not to be in the SE. No Aussie, NZ this time. Most north Asian cities are available during the peak summer heat and Dubai isn’t available maybe due to the haj period.

Raeza

Did some random checks on the SIN-HKT routing. Two of the listed flights, MI 752 and MI 760, don’t seem to be scheduled to fly in August 2019 at all. Trying to let the CSO on the online webchat know about this to get to the bottom of the issue, but he/she is simply asking me to book available flights. PR fail.

Raeza

Guess what, they redid the flights available for redemption on SIN-HKT / HKT-SIN. A CSO called to thank me for pointing our the mistake .

You may want to update your data.

Newbie

So you recommend paying the full redemption rate for business to LA rather than flying the much cheaper premium economy redemption?
