KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes for October 2019 have been announced, with 30% off selected Singapore Airlines and SilkAir flights.

All Spontaneous Escape awards must be booked and ticketed by 30 September 2019 and are for travel between 1-31 October 2019 (both dates inclusive, blackout dates apply). The one exception is Los Angeles, which is for travel between 1-30 November 2019. This gives you 14 days to book, on par with the historical average we’ve seen.

What’s good this month?
October 2019 features roughly the same number of destinations as September 2019, but what’s changed is the distribution.
Absent are Spontaneous Escapes stalwarts like Bangkok, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hanoi, and Hong Kong (odd, because you’d think with the protests they’d have a ton of spare capacity on that route). SilkAir also reverts to all Economy after offering some Business Class awards last month.
Here’s what caught my eye:
Istanbul, Manchester, Houston feature for the first time
October 2019 marks the first month we’ve seen Istanbul, Manchester or Houston ever feature in Spontaneous Escapes (we’ve seen the fifth freedom route MAN-IAH been offered in June 2019, but not SIN-MAN or SIN-MAN-IAH).
Unfortunately, no discounted Business Class awards are available on these routes. Istanbul is only available in Economy Class, while Manchester and Houston are available in Premium Economy.
I’d be hard pressed to recommend burning your hard-earned miles on Premium Economy, even at a discount. That said, some would argue that with Spontaneous Escapes, you’re paying a small premium over Economy Class to fly Premium Economy. I suppose if you’re starting from the position of redeeming Economy Class, then yes- it’s correct to say that this is a small premium for a small incremental comfort. It’s not my cup of tea, but I’ve learned that the best redemption is the one that makes you happy.
Gateway to Europe
I noted in my meta-analysis of Spontaneous Escapes that we don’t really see Europe feature all that often. This month’s a bit of an outlier in that we’re seeing four European destinations, the most in any Spontaneous Escapes since March 2019.
Only Frankfurt and Dusseldorf have Business Class awards, but their central position in Europe makes them good springboards to access the rest of the continent. It’s not difficult to find a cheap budget flight to London, Paris, Stockholm, Munich, or any of SQ’s Europe destinations that don’t feature in premium cabins.
New Business Class only available on one route
Last month’s Spontaneous Escapes offered the chance to try SQ’s latest 2017 Business Class to Mumbai, but Mumbai’s no longer on offer this month.
This leaves Shanghai as the only route where you can try the new product at a discounted rate. You’ll want to book SQ830/833 to snag this seat.
Options to Australia
We’ve not seen Sydney or Melbourne feature in Spontaneous Escapes since June 2019, but Adelaide (ADL-SIN) is on offer in Business Class. This gives you the opportunity to try Singapore Airlines’ regional A350-900s, which are equipped with the 2018 Regional Business Class seat. Brisbane is also worth a look, with Business Class awards at only 43,400 miles in both directions.
Conclusion
Spontaneous Escapes are a great way of stretching your miles, especially if you’re traveling with your family. Remember to ticket your awards before 30 September!
