If you’ve been referring friends or family for American Express cards through the Member Get Member (MGM) program, you may be interested to know that some changes are coming from 4 June 2020. This marks the second set of changes in less than 12 months, the previous one having taken place in October 2019.
To summarize, the spending requirements for referees are doubling, with the miles on offer staying the same (for the KrisFlyer cobrand cards) or decreasing (for the AMEX Platinum Credit Card).
So if you want to refer a friend or get referred (any of the links in this post will bring you to the MGM offer), be sure to do so before 4 June 2020.
New MGM offer for AMX Platinum Credit Card

From 4 June 2020, those who refer a friend to the AMEX Platinum Credit Card will receive 12,000 points (down from 15,000) when their referee is approved and pays the S$321 annual fee.

The referee will have to spend S$2,000 in the first 3 months to get 12,000 bonus points- double the spending requirement, and 20% fewer points.

From 4 June 2020, those who refer a friend to the AMEX KrisFlyer Credit Card will receive 3,000 miles (down from 5,000) when their referee is approved.

The referee will have to spend S$2,000 in the first 3 months to get 3,000 bonus miles.

There’s no change to the bonus for those who refer friends to the AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend card- they’ll continue to earn 7,500 bonus miles when their referee is approved and pays the S$337.05 annual fee.

However, the referee will now have to spend S$2,000 in the first 3 months to unlock 7,500 bonus miles, twice the previous figure.
Conclusion
As a reminder, all MGM bonuses stack with whatever existing sign-up bonuses there are, and spending for the MGM bonus double counts towards the sign-up bonus spending.
It’s disappointing that the MGM scheme is getting less generous (MGM is generally a cheaper route of acquisition for AMEX, and you’d think they’d be doubling down in a time like this), but there’s still time to take advantage of the existing offers. Be sure to refer your friends before 4 June 2020.
