Extended: HSBC Revolution S$200 cashback sign-up offer

Last Updated:

Apply for the excellent HSBC Revolution card by 31 October 2021 and get S$200 cashback with just S$500 spend.

The HSBC Revolution Card received a major overhaul in 2020, adding 10X points (4 mpd) on a wide range of categories including travel, shopping, groceries, dining, and transport. The S$160.50 annual fee was permanently removed, and cardholders get a free Entertainer membership on top of all that.

These changes have made it one of my go-to cards, and I religiously max out the monthly 10X cap (S$1,000) without fail.

HSBC has now further extended its S$200 cashback sign-up offer on the HSBC Revolution until 31 October 2021. An additional clause has been added that requires applicants to opt-in for marketing and promotional materials at the time of submitting their application, and maintain this until the gift is credited.

New customers

New-to-bank cardholders who apply by 31 October 2021 will receive up to S$200 cashback when they spend at least S$500 within the qualifying spend period (1-2 months, see below). This consists of:

  • S$30 cashback for applying through SingPass MyInfo
  • S$50 cashback for charging one qualifying transaction in the first month of card opening
  • S$120 cashback for meeting the S$500 minimum spend during the qualifying period
⚠️ New-to-bank cardholders are defined as those who do not currently hold a principal HSBC credit card (except the HSBC Visa Infinite), and have not in the last 12 months

The qualifying spending period depends on when your card was approved, but will be between 1-2 months.

*Remember, your application must be submitted by 31 Oct 2021, but the approval (and card opening date) may come a few days later

An additional clause has been added that requires applicants to opt-in for marketing and promotional materials at the time of submitting their application, and maintain this until the gift is credited.

Existing customers

Existing customers who apply by 31 October 2021 will receive up to S$60 cashback when they spend a minimum of S$500 in the qualifying spend period (1-2 months, see below). This consists of:

  • S$30 cashback for applying through SingPass MyInfo
  • S$30 cashback for meeting the S$500 minimum spend during the qualifying period

The qualifying spending period depends on when your card was approved, but will be between 1-2 months.

*Remember, your application must be submitted by 31 Oct 2021, but the approval (and card opening date) may come a few days later

An important point to note: HSBC is doing something rather unusual with their definition of “existing customers”. While most banks simply define them as “anyone who isn’t a new customer”, HSBC adds the further conditions:

  • Existing HSBC Credit Card* must be issued more than 12 months earlier;
  • Did not cancel any HSBC Credit Card* within last 12 months

*excludes HSBC Visa Infinite

For example, if you were approved for a HSBC Advance Credit Card in November 2020, you will not count as an existing customer for the purposes of this promotion. Likewise, if you cancelled a HSBC Advance Credit Card in November 2020, you will not count as an existing customer for the purposes of this promotion.

This means you’re in a limbo of sorts- not entitled to the new or existing customer gifts. I guess HSBC is trying to disincentivize those who apply for a lot of credit cards in quick succession, and you’ll need to be a “new” existing customer to enjoy a gift.

An additional clause has been added that requires applicants to opt-in for marketing and promotional materials at the time of submitting their application, and maintain this until the gift is credited.

What counts as qualifying spending?

The easiest way to hit your S$500 minimum spending is to go out and shop at a supermarket. Since you’ll earn 4 mpd, there really is no opportunity cost involved in using the HSBC Revolution; it’s the card I’d use by default anyway.

Do note that your transactions must post by the end of the qualifying period. It can take anywhere from 1-3 days for a transaction to post to your account, so don’t leave your spending till the last moment.

The minimum spend of S$500 does not include the following:

  • Foreign exchange transactions (including but not limited to Forex.com);
  • Donations and payments to charitable, social organisations and religious organisations;
  • Quasi-cash transactions (including but not limited to transactions relating to money orders, traveler’s checks, gaming related transactions, lottery tickets and gambling);
  • Payments made to financial institutions, securities brokerages or dealers (including but not limited to the trading of securities, investments or crypto-currencies of any kind);
  • Payments on money payments/transfers (including but not limited to Paypal, SKR skrill.com, CardUp, SmoovPay, iPayMy);
  • Payments to any professional services provider (including but not limited to GOOGLE Ads, Facebook Ads, Amazon Web Services, MEDIA TRAFFIC AGENCY INC);
  • Top-ups, money transfers or purchase of credits of prepaid cards, stored-value cards or e-wallets (including but not limited to EZ-Link, Transitlink, NETS Flashpay and Youtrip);
  • Payments in connection with any government institutions and/or services (including but not limited to court costs, fines, bail and bond payment);
  • Any AXS and ATM transactions;
  • Tax payments (including HSBC Tax Payment Facility);
  • Payments for cleaning, maintenance and janitorial services (including property management fees);
  • Payments to insurance companies (including but not limited to sales, underwriting, premiums and insurance services);
  • Payments to educational institutions;
  • Payments on utilities;
  • The monthly instalment amounts under the HSBC Spend Instalment;
  • Balance transfers, fund transfers, cash advances, finance charges, late charges, HSBC’s Cash Instalment Plan, any fees charged by HSBC;
  • Any unposted, cancelled, disputed and refunded transactions.

The key exclusions to note here are insurance, utilities, education, government transactions as well as CardUp/ipaymy. These were all excluded from 1 July 2020 onwards as part of HSBC’s revised rewards terms and conditions.

Conclusion

HSBC Revolution
Apply here

The HSBC Revolution is one of the most useful cards on the market right now, and what I particularly like is that it awards 4 mpd on both dining and hotels. This solves the age old question of “what card for hotel restaurants?” It’s also an easy way to earn 4 mpd at Cold Storage (remember: UOB cards will only earn SMART$ here), and on staycations.

With no annual fee, a free copy of The Entertainer and a wide range of bonus partners, there’s very little to dislike about it. Be sure to check out this list of important things to know about the HSBC Revolution as well.

Remember that you must apply by 31 October 2021 and be approved by 15 November 2021 to be eligible.
