OCBC 90°N Cards offering Samsonite sign-up gift with S$500 spend

If you’ve been toying with signing up for an OCBC 90°N Card, but think their current sign-up offer of 25,500 miles for S$15,000 spend is insane (and it is!), here’s something more palatable.

From now till 30 June 2023, new-to-bank OCBC 90°N Cardholders can get a Samsonite luggage bag with a minimum spend of just S$500 within the first month of approval. 

The catch? It’s a UOB-style promotion, capped at the first 1,000 eligible customers.

New-to-bank customers are defined as those who: do not currently hold a principal OCBC credit card, and have not cancelled one in the past six months prior to 12 April 2023 Holding a supplementary OCBC credit card does not, in and of itself, cause you to become an existing customer.

From 12 April to 30 June 2023, new-to-bank cardholders approved for an OCBC 90°N Mastercard or OCBC 90°N Visa will receive a Samsonite STEM Spinner 28″ TRUNK luggage with a minimum qualifying spend of S$500.  For avoidance of doubt, you will only qualify for a maximum of one luggage, even if you apply for both the Mastercard and Visa versions. 

Since this offer runs concurrently with the 25,500 miles promotion (marketed by OCBC as 55,000 miles, since they include the miles from paying the annual fee and the S$15,000 minimum spend), you’ll be prompted to select your sign-up reward when you apply. 

This luggage gift, unfortunately, is capped at the first 1,000 eligible cardmembers. How do you know if you’re still in the first 1,000? You don’t. Just like UOB’s sign up offers, these are basically gambles. You can improve your chances by applying and meeting the minimum spend ASAP, but there’s no guarantee.

The qualifying period to meet the S$500 spend can be anywhere from 1-2 months, depending on approval date. It’s better to get approved early in the month, since that gives you more time to spend (though I doubt you’ll want to wait till May 2023 to apply, since the number of eligible applicants is capped).

In addition to the luggage gift, cardholders will earn base miles on their S$500 spend as follows:

• 1.3 mpd for local spend
• 2.1 mpd for overseas spend

The first year’s annual fee of S$194.40 is waived for those who take the luggage offer. 

What counts as qualifying spend?

Qualifying spend refers to in-person or online retail transactions, excluding transactions such as:

• Charitable Donations
• Education
• Government Transactions
• GrabPay top-ups
• Hospitals
• Insurance
• Utilities

The full list of non-qualifying spend can be found in the OCBC 90°N Card’s T&Cs at point 1.4 to 1.6. 

CardUp spending will count towards the minimum spend, and with CardUp offering some solid deals, that could be a viable way of going about things. CardUp is currently running the following promotions:

Is this a good deal?

Well, it’s certainly better than spending S$15,000 for 25,500 miles, I can tell you that! Assuming you end up within the first 1,000, spending S$500 for a Samsonite bag is a pretty decent deal, and something I’d be happy to cash in my new-to-bank status for. 

However, it’s worth pointing out that there’s an alternative offer available that has no cap. New-to-bank customers who spend S$500 within 30 days of approval will get S$228 cashback, simple as that. Should you not fancy rolling the dice, then this would be the right offer for you.
