KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes for December 2018 announced

Redeem selected Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class awards for 30% off.

Every month, Singapore Airlines releases a list of discounted KrisFlyer Saver awards to select destinations called “Spontaneous Escapes“. These awards go at a 30% discount compared to their normal redemption prices.

KrisFlyer has just released its December spontaneous escapes list. These awards:

  • Must be booked and ticketed by 30 November 2018 (waitlists that clear after 30 November will be charged the regular rate, regardless of when you waitlisted)
  • Must be flown from 1-31 December 2018 or 1-31 January 2019 (for US destinations only)

Tickets issued under Spontaneous Escapes cannot be changed or cancelled, unlike regular award tickets which allow this for a fee. If you’re booking a Spontaneous Escapes award, be sure about your travel plans, or buy a travel insurance policy that covers miles bookings.

If you’re willing to travel in January 2019, you can also enjoy special Premium Economy awards on SQ’s non-stop flights to the US. SQ has been having trouble filling these seats, so it’s unsurprising to see them on sale.

What’s good this month?

Airlines typically have no problems filling seats in December, at least to leisure destinations, so it’s unsurprising that it’s fairly slim pickings this month. Popular holiday destinations like Bali have blackout dates that cover the Christmas period, and Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket are nowhere to be seen. There are no European cities on offer (not even perennial favourite Dusseldorf), and popular Singaporean destinations Taipei and Tokyo are missing too.

I imagine most people would rather not spend winter in Beijing or Shanghai, and although economy class discounts from Nagoya to Singapore (take note: not all Spontaneous Escape awards are offered both ways!) are available, the post Christmas period is again blacked out.

If you’re looking to try some new cabin products, you’ll be pleased to note that the new A380 Business Class product on SQ221 is available for booking ex-SIN for 40,600 miles (but you’ll pay full price flying back from SYD). I reviewed the excellent new Business Class product back in March and would recommend it in a heartbeat.

You’ll also be able to try this product on SQ830/833 to and from PVG.

You can also try SQ’s 2018 Regional Business Class seat on SQ942/943 to and from DPS, although as mentioned the pre and post-Christmas period is blocked off. I had a chance to check out the seat at the unveiling event, and Matthew’s actually flown it, but I’m looking to do a proper trip report soon.

I mentioned that Premium Economy seats were available on SQ’s A350-900 ULR non-stop flights to SFO and LAX, although this month the discounted price of 45,500 miles is more than November’s offer of 38,000 miles.

Given that you can find revenue Premium Economy fares in January from SIN to LAX and SFO below S$1,500, it’s hard to make the case for redeeming miles especially when you consider the fact you’ll earn miles on revenue tickets.

Below you’ll find the full list of Spontaneous Escapes for December 2018 (and January 2019, for LAX and SFO).

The Dutchman

hey bro, is there a promo code to this? i just checked, there are no rates discount ler. fly to Shanghai still 70k miles, zero change….

The Dutchman

Tried, didn’t work. btw, i heard from many people the new design sucks, the seats are way smaller. the only 2 things that are good are the touchscreen and the fact that it’s new.

freedom

It still shows 70K miles, but after you select it, it will become lower if it is eligible.

The Dutchman

Tried that too, i checked everything, travel date, flight number and check out, no changes….

freedom

I just tried return SIN-PVG SQ830, Dec 16th, PVG-SIN SQ833, Dec 20th. total 49K + $65.2
