KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes released: 50% off SilkAir awards

Book these discounted Saver awards by 31 August 2018 for travel in September and October 2018.

Singapore Airlines releases a list of discounted KrisFlyer redemption Saver awards to select destinations every month called “Spontaneous Escapes“. These discounted Saver awards are going at a 30% discount compared to their normal redemption prices.

Singapore Airlines has just released the list for travel in September 2018 and you’ll need to book these discounted award tickets by 31 August 2018 and travel between 1 September 2018 – 30 September 2018. Note that there are several blackout dates which are stated on the website and flights on these dates will price out at the normal redemption rates.

What’s excellent about this edition of Spontaneous Escapes is that all SilkAir redemptions on Spontaneous Escapes routes will go for a discount of 50% instead of the usual 30%. What’s more, all flights redeemed on SilkAir during this Spontaneous Escapes promotion are valid for travel between 1 September 2018 to 31 October 2018.

A reminder that tickets issued under the Spontaneous Escapes promotion are non-changeable and cannot be canceled as well. This is unlike regular award tickets which at least allow you to refund your booking and miles for a fee. Thus, your travel plans have to be very firm before taking advantage of this promotion (or you should buy a travel insurance policy that covers miles and points bookings).

In addition, just be reminded that if you waitlist a Spontaneous Escape award and that award clears after 31 August 2018, you will be charged the full amount of miles required for the flight.

Hong Kong makes its return, no flights to Australia or Europe are available

In September’s edition of Spontaneous Escapes, Hong Kong is back on the list and so is Osaka. If you are looking at redeeming a Spontaneous Escapes award to the South Pacific, you’re out of luck as only Wellington is on the September list.

Bangkok is on the list and this presents a great opportunity to sample the new regional Business Class product for less.

You can also take SQ856 to Hong Kong and SQ861 from Hong Kong to Singapore to experience the new Business Class seats onboard the A380.

Again, flights to Europe are not made available under Spontaneous Escapes rate presumably due to the European summer season where seats are in high demand across all cabin classes.

Redeem SilkAir flights at 50% off, travel between 1 September to 31 October 2018

As mentioned earlier, SilkAir flights are being offered at 50% off in September’s Spontaneous Escapes promotion in both Economy Class and Business Class. In addition, SilkAir flights booked during this Spontaneous Escapes promotion are valid for travel between 1 September and 31 October 2018.

During normal Spontaneous Escapes promotions, the travel period for discounted award flights is only for flights in the next month so this is definitely an added bonus if you are looking for flights with SilkAir.

Penang at 3,750 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class is a good deal and you will essentially be getting a return award at the price of a one-way award. Koh Samui is also available for redemption at just 6,250 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class.

If you are looking to splurge a little for Business Class, redemptions start from as low as 8,750 KrisFlyer miles. But this might not be worth redeeming especially on flights to destinations with a flight time of below 2 hours such as Phuket and Penang.

Business Class on SilkAir is laid out in a 2-2 configuration on both their A320, A319, A321 and Boeing 737 aircraft and Economy Class is in a 3-3 layout.

You can view the full list of destinations on the Spontaneous Escapes website. Here are some of my personal picks for the Spontaneous Escapes promotion:

  • Penang (MI): 3,750 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class
  • Koh Samui (MI) : 6,250 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class
  • Bangkok (SQ) : 14,000 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Business Class
  • Hong Kong (SQ): 19,250 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Business Class
  • Seoul(SQ) : 30,100 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Business Class

Concluding Thoughts

While the lack of destinations in the South Pacific region as well as Europe is definitely sad to see, this is still a great Spontaneous Escapes promotion especially if you are looking for a short getaway around the region in September or October with SilkAir.

At 3,750 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class to destinations such as Penang and 6,250 KrisFlyer miles one-way in Economy Class to Phuket, Koh Samui and Cebu even, these prices are definitely a bargain.

I know we normally don’t advocate redeeming your precious KrisFlyer miles for Economy Class but when award flights are going at 50% off? This is a darn good deal if you are able to snag a seat.

Where will you be heading for a Spontaneous Escape?
