Air Travel Bubble: 21 Great Hotel Deals for Hong Kong

With less than one week to go till the inaugural flight of the Singapore-Hong Kong Air Travel Bubble (ATB), I’ve been busy researching Hong Kong hotel options for my three-night stay.

I knew the rates would be low, but I was still shocked by the deals I found.

As it turns out, Hong Kong residents enjoy much better staycation packages than us in Singapore (HK folks: do you guys not like staycations or something?). I’ve seen numerous packages which rebate almost the entire cost of the room through F&B credit, and five-star hotels selling rooms for what a three-star hotel in Singapore would cost. How on earth do they make any money on these?

In any case, I’m not about to question a good thing. Here’s a roundup of the various deals, split into different price bands. Don’t assume that the cheapest band is for budget hotels only- with all that’s going on now, you can get some pretty amazing hotels without breaking the bank. 

As a reminder, Hong Kong imposes a 10% service charge on all hotel stays, and no GST. 

Royal Pacific Hotel

It’s cheap and cheerful, and it’s right next to Kowloon Park and a few flagship malls. Royal Pacific Hotel is offering a 33 hours package which grants you 9 a.m check-in, 6 p.m check-out and HK$200 of dining credits a night, for just HK$466 nett.

They’re even rolling out the red carpet for Singapore travelers with a special ATB package, but I don’t think it’s a good deal. You’ll need to stay one night at the Fullerton Hotel/Fullerton Bay Hotel in Singapore, and then you’ll get a Towers Harbour Suite in Hong Kong for HK$1,750+ per night (min 2 nights). Too many hoops to jump through, in my opinion. 

The Pottinger

If you don’t mind moving hotels during your stay, The Pottinger Hong Kong has an interesting Double Nights Double Delights package. For HK$1,485 nett, you get one night at The Pottinger, and one night at the Island Pacific Hotel– that’s an average of just HK$743 nett per night!

The Pottinger is the much nicer of the two, but the Island Pacific Hotel is has decent reviews too. At the end of the day, it’s still two nights in Hong Kong for S$258 nett- hard to argue with that. 

InterContinental Grand Stanford

If you’re staying on Saturday and Sunday night, you can consider buying a voucher for the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong (home of Hoi King Heen, a one Michelin Star restaurant with an impressive dim sum menu).

This costs HK$1,518 nett for two nights, with breakfast for one person. An additional HK$275 nett is payable for the second person’s breakfast. 

Harbour Plaza Metropolis

If you’re not a brand snob and just want something close to the action, the Harbour Plaza Metropolis is just one MTR stop away from Tsim Sha Tsui. 

Rooms aren’t luxurious, but they’re cheap. For HK$770 nett, you get breakfast and HK$500 of F&B credit.

Cordis Hong Kong

The Cordis has come up with a special package for Singapore travellers, which requires a minimum four night stay. You’ll pay an average of HK$968 nett a night, but no breakfast is included.

However, if you hold an AMEX Platinum Charge card, try booking via The Hotel Collection instead. I found a rate of S$421 nett for 2 nights, with a room upgrade, breakfast and US$100 hotel credit (equal to HKD780). This yields a rough rate of HK$823 nett per night- much better value. 

Gateway Hotel Hong Kong

If the reviews for the Marco Polo Hotel (see below) scare you but you still want to rack up GHA nights, why not try the Gateway Hotel instead? It’s also part of the Marco Polo chain (and therefore GHA), but it’s cheaper, ranked higher on TripAdvisor, with bigger rooms and a generous F&B credit offer too. 

Booking the Gourmet Getaway package gets you a HK$989 nett room rate with HK$600 dining credit, a one-category upgrade, and guaranteed 10 a.m/4 p.m check in/out (for Sun-Thurs arrivals). 

Lanson Place Hong Kong

Fancy a room with club lounge access? Lanson Place Hong Kong is offering a Club 133 promotion with daily breakfast, evening cocktails and 4 p.m check-out (subject to availability). 

The booking is non-refundable, but Lanson has a “worry-free guaranteed program” for all bookings made by 31 December 2020. The date of your stay can be changed as many times as you wish within one year. 

Marco Polo Hotel

The Foodie Escape package at the Marco Polo Hong Kong starts at HK$1,417 nett, and rebates an incredible HK$1,300 in terms of dining credit. If you check-in from Sunday to Thursday, you’ll also enjoy a one-category room upgrade and 6 p.m check-out, guaranteed. This hotel is part of the GHA, so you can earn local experiences and enjoy elite benefits if you hold GHA status.

Fair warning though, I’ve read the hotel reviews on TripAdvisor and they’re…mixed. Common complaints include dated, smoky rooms, and unimpressive food. Perhaps there’s a reason the package is so generous.

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

Hyatt is offering a Welcome Back to Hong Kong package which gives 50% off each second night at properties across Hong Kong. At the Grand Hyatt, this works out to a HK$1,485 nett rate per night, inclusive of breakfast.

This is particularly good if you’re a Hyatt Globalist member, because the club lounge serves all-day champagne. 

Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui

Guests who book the imaginatively-named Staycation offer at the Hyatt Regency will enjoy a rate of HK$1,518 nett on weekdays and HK$1,595 nett on weekends. They can choose from various dining offers, including: 

• 3-course takeaway set lunch from Cafe and a set dinner from Cafe or The Chinese Restaurant for two, to be served in guestroom (please click HERE for the menu)
• All-you-can-eat dim sum set at The Chinese Restaurant for two (served from 10:00 AM- noon), and an in-room pre-dinner cocktail which includes a 36-month Iberico Recebo platter and a bottle of red or white wine (valid for stays actualized from Monday to Thursday except public holidays)
• HK$1,000 net dining credit per night to be consumed in the award-winning Hugo’s, other dining outlets and room service
• Enjoy dinner buffet at Cafe for two at an additional of HK$300 for Monday to Thursday except public holidays and its eves, or HK$400 for Friday to Sunday and public holidays and its eves
• Enjoy four-course set dinner for two (salt baked duckling or drunken spiny lobster) at The Chinese Restaurant at an additional of HK$300 only (please click HERE for the menu)

Assuming you take the dining credits, you’re basically recovering up to two thirds of your room rate already. 

If you prefer to dine elsewhere, the room-only rate for World of Hyatt members starts from HK$815 nett, and if you’re a Hyatt Globalist, you get breakfast and lounge access anyway. 

JW Marriott Hong Kong

JW Marriott’s Family Fun offer requires you to book two rooms, but assuming you’re traveling as a family, could be great value. 

For HK$3,269 nett, you get a pair of connecting rooms, breakfast for four, and up to HK$1,500 of F&B credit. Staying from Sunday to Thursday gets you 30 hours of stay time, and they throw in a bottle of wine too.

Note: if you’re booking this rate, you don’t need to select two rooms or four adults. Simply book one room for two adults, and upon arrival you receive two rooms for up to four adults. 

Kowloon Shangri-La

The Kowloon Shangri-La has room rates starting from HK$1,650 nett, with HK$1,000 rebated in hotel credits. You’ll also earn double GC Award points for good measure. 

If you just need the room, you could go as low as S$251 nett, but it’s probably better to take the dining credits. 

Hotel ICON

Hotel ICON is one of the top-rated hotels in Hong Kong (#5 on TripAdvisor), and interestingly enough, serves as a training ground for the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s hotel and tourism management students. 

Their Foodcation+ package starts from HK$1,716 nett, with your choice of HK$800 F&B credit per day, or a range of set menus at the hotel’s various dining outlets. Breakfast can be added on for HK$165 nett per person.

The Langham Hong Kong

The Langham’s Gourmet Moments promotion seems to be priced at HK$1,967 nett regardless of date (I checked quite a few), and rebates you HK$1,400 in dining credit. That’s 70% of your post tax rate back!

If you don’t need so much dining credit and hold an AMEX Platinum Charge, consider booking through FHR instead. I managed to find a HK$1,320 nett rate, and since all FHR bookings include breakfast, a room upgrade, early check-in/late check-out and a US$100 (~HK$775) hotel credit, you can’t go wrong like this either. 

W Hong Kong

W Hong Kong’s Dine Whatever/Whenever package starts at HK$2,420 nett, and rebates HK$1,000 in dining credits every night. Breakfast is included, as well as a HK$500 spa credit.

If you’re at least a Marriott Bonvoy Silver member, be sure to select the “Elite Exclusive Offer”, which comes with 5,000 bonus points per stay. 

I’ve stayed at the W Hong Kong before, and it was a whole lot of fun (although that was probably in no small part because I got upgraded to a Marvelous Suite as a Platinum).

For alcoholics, you may also want to consider their Live Up with Cheers deal, which starts at HK$2,255 nett and includes a 90-minute free flow cocktail session for 2 at WOOBAR. 

The Murray

The Murray is under Niccolo Luxury Resorts & Hotels, which is part of the GHA (i.e GHA elite members can earn local experiences and enjoy additional benefits). The property opened in early 2018, and has been raking in the plaudits ever since. 

Their staycation package costs HK$2,420 nett, with HK$1,200 of dining credit per night. 

Four Seasons Hong Kong

The Four Seasons Hong Kong will never be cheap, but this current Klook deal certainly makes it cheaper. For HK$2,430 nett, you can get a night’s stay with breakfast and HK$1,000 rebated to you in hotel credit, bringing the net cost down to about S$248. 

Be sure to select the “Deluxe Peak View Room with Breakfast and (3-course Dinner for 2 persons or HKD1000 Hotel Credit)” package on the Klook landing page- there are quite a few offers so it’s easy to get confused. 

Ritz Carlton Hong Kong

The lowest rate I can find at the Ritz Carlton Hong Kong starts at HK$2,717 nett, with breakfast included. However, it’s non-refundable, so you’ll need to be sure of your plans.

If you’re willing to shell out a bit more, however, you could get the Stay & Dine package, which includes not just breakfast, but a three-course Steak Fritz dinner, a half bottle of champagne, 20% off F&B, and an upgrade to a Deluxe Victora Harbor room for stays of at least 2 nights. This starts at HK$3,190 nett per night- so you pay S$82 more for a steak dinner and champagne. 

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

The Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong (not to be confused with The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong) is offering a Staycation by M.O package for HK$3,168 nett, with HK$1,000 in dining credits and breakfast. 

Guests also enjoy 25% off F&B and a choice of a staycation experience: Daily Hotel History Tour; or Chocolate Class, Mixology Class and Tea Class (available on weekends only)

Rosewood Hong Kong

Rosewood is one of the most luxurious brands in the world, and it’s no surprise that even in the midst of a pandemic, the pricing premium remains. However, it is possible to get a breakfast included rate for just HK$3,245 nett if you’re arriving from Sunday to Thursday.

A set meal is also included, with your choice of the following:

• Holt’s Café:  Dim Sum Afternoon Tea + a glass of Champagne for two persons (between 3 p.m. and 4. 30 p.m.)
• Bayfare Social: Paella, charcuterie board served with a side of babaganoush and a carafe of Sangria for two persons (between 3 p.m. and 4. 30 p.m.)
• Asaya Kitchen:  Three-course lunch menu with choice of beverage (between 12 noon and 2:30 p.m.) *Very limited availability

I have to say, even in the entry-level room, the bathroom looks stunning.

The Landmark Mandarin Oriental

And finally, the granddaddy of them all. The Landmark Mandarin Oriental is arguably the hotel in Hong Kong, situated in the heart of the world’s most expensive real estate. Expect fawning service, opulent breakfasts, and a two storey spa. 

While I certainly wouldn’t be willing to shell out the asking price of HK$4,290 nett per night, those who do will enjoy HK$1,000 in dining credits, and a complimentary one-way limo transfer with the LMO Turns 15 package. Surprisingly, breakfast is not included. 

What card should I use to book Hong Kong hotels?

The correct card depends on whether your rate is prepaid online, or paid later on at the hotel at check-out. Here’s the cards you can use to earn the most miles.

Don’t forget that it’s possible to earn up to 10 mpd on Agoda bookings with the DBS Woman’s World or DBS Altitude Cards, provided you book and stay by 31 December 2020. OCBC 90N and OCBC VOYAGE are also offering up to 7 mpd on overseas hotels, for stays booked by 31 July 2021 and stayed by 31 December 2021. 

That said, the best packages and offers will often have to be booked directly on the hotel’s official website. 

Conclusion

Hong Kong isn’t short of hotel deals right now, and I’m sure there’s many others I haven’t spotted yet. Nonetheless, this is hopefully a useful starting point for those of you planning to make the trip. 

Remember to register for any relevant hotel promotions (e.g World of Hyatt’s 3X points offer) before you stay.
