foodpanda ends KrisFlyer partnership from 7 July

Heads up: You won't earn additional KrisFlyer miles on foodpanda orders from 7 July, as the platform looks to launch its own rewards scheme.

foodpanda is calling time on its partnership with Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, which launched back in March 2019 to much fanfare.

From 7 July 2021, it will no longer be possible to earn KrisFlyer miles when ordering food or groceries through foodpanda.

foodpanda x KrisFlyer: A retrospective

foodpanda first announced its tie-up with KrisFlyer in March 2019, allowing users to earn 1 mile per S$1 with a minimum spend of S$35.

This was a relatively high threshold, given that competing platforms like Grab allowed miles to be accrued with any amount of spend (albeit indirectly, in the form of GrabRewards points). However, foodpanda’s earn rate was superior to Grab’s, and even more so after the March 2020 GrabRewards massacre.

Moreover, foodpanda sometimes doubled its earn rate, which allowed customers to earn up to 6 mpd on food delivery by stacking it with the right 4 mpd card. Even better, the minimum spend was reduced to S$20 in early 2020, making it easier to earn miles on smaller orders.

But then things eventually came full circle in May this year, when the minimum spend was reverted back to S$35. And now with the cessation of the partnership, we’re back to square one.

My guess is that foodpanda is looking for something that locks people into their ecosystem. This might explain their plans to launch a rewards program of their own a la Grab, complete with challenges, badges and points.

Good luck with that I guess. I doubt it’s going to be very generous, given the pressure on profitability.

What cards should I use with foodpanda?

Just because foodpanda is ceasing to award miles doesn’t mean you can’t earn them altogether. Users who make foodpanda transactions with the following credit cards will earn up to 4 mpd:

Conclusion

It won’t be possible to earn KrisFlyer miles with foodpanda from 7 July, so remove that from your decision-making process when comparing to GrabFood or Deliveroo.

I can’t say they’re giving a whole lot of notice, but then again I never really bothered with foodpanda anyway, what with their deliberately awful customer service.
