How to check credit card points expiry

Checking points expiry should be bread-and-butter stuff, but some banks make it surprisingly difficult. Here's my take on who does well, and who needs to improve.

In the miles game, there’s probably no worse feeling than seeing your hard-earned points expire.

What’s annoying is that even if you know the expiry policies inside out, not every bank makes it easy to check your points expiry date. Some only show points expiring in the next 3-6 months, others bury the details in the eStatement, still others require you to pick up the phone and call!

Without a complete picture of the “vintage” of your points, it’s hard to make redemption plans, so here’s a rundown of which banks make tracking expiry easy — and which don’t.

How do banks fare on points expiry transparency?

Here’s my overall bank-by-bank scorecard for points expiry transparency.

Bank Expiry Transparency Remarks
N/A MR points do not expire
Good Shows expiry date for all points (eStatement only)
Very Poor Only shows points expiring in the next 3 months (eStatement only)
Very Good Full breakdown of expiry dates for all points on PayLah!
Poor Only shows points expiring in the next 6 months
Average Only shows next batch of expiring points
Very Poor Only shows points expiring in the next 3 months
Very Good Shows expiry date for all points
Average Only shows next batch of expiring points

Generally speaking, there are three ways of checking your points expiry date:

  • App
  • Online banking
  • eStatement

Checking expiry dates via the app or online banking is the most convenient, but it’ll surprise you how many banks don’t offer this feature. In some cases, you’ll need to go the extra step of generating your eStatement, whic,h while not a herculean task, does require a bit more effort.

Even when the information is readily available online, it may not be granular enough for decision making. For example, OCBC tells me that I have no points expiring in the next three months. That’s great…but it doesn’t really answer my question: when do my points actually expire?

American Express

💳 Points Expiry Policy
Membership Rewards points do not expire.

Membership Rewards points do not expire, so there’s nothing to check here.

Bank of China

App & online banking

While you can view your points balance through the Citi app and online banking, you cannot check your points expiry online, following the decommissioning of the ThankYou portal in early 2024.

eStatement

The eStatement will display points which are expiring within the next three months, but nothing beyond that.

DBS

💳 Points Expiry Policy

DBS Points expire one year from the quarterly period in which they were earned (i.e. 12-15 months validity), except for:

HSBC

💳 Points Expiry Policy

Rewards Infinite members enjoy non-expiring points. Maybank Visa Infinite and World Mastercard are automatically enrolled into Rewards Infinite, while Maybank Horizon Visa Signature cardmembers will qualify when they spend at least S$24,000 in a 12-month membership year.

❓ Expiry Transparency

90°N Miles and VOYAGE Miles do not expire.

❓ Expiry Transparency
Very Poor

App & online banking

OCBC’s app and online banking interface only shows OCBC$ expiring in the next three months.

To check this, log in to internet banking > Rewards.

The eStatement is supposed to contain further information on OCBC rewards points, but for the past few months, all that’s displayed is a message about “system maintenance”.

Standard Chartered

❓ Expiry Transparency
Very Good

App & online banking

To check your points expiry, log in to the SC Rewards portal > Click on your name at the top right > Account Summary > More Details > Expiry Details

Not the best of examples, since I have an SC Priority Visa Infinite with non-expiring points

eStatement

The eStatement shows when your 360° Rewards Points will expire (remember, all your points share the same expiry date).

UOB

💳 Points Expiry Policy
UNI$ expire 2 years from the last day of each periodic quarter in which the UNI$ was earned (i.e. 24-27 months validity)
❓ Expiry Transparency
Average

App & online banking

The UOB TMRW app shows the next batch of expiring UNI$, but not the rest of your balance.

To check this, log in to UOB TMRW > Rewards+ > My rewards > UNI$

eStatement

The eStatement only shows UNI$ expiring at the end of that particular calendar quarter.

Conclusion

In general, banks in Singapore could do a much better job communicating points expiry more clearly.

DBS is the only bank that gives a detailed breakdown of which points expire when (Standard Chartered too, but since all their points expire on the same date, it’s not that hard to implement (so why can’t Citibank do it?!)).

Without a complete picture of the “vintage” of your points, it’s hard to make redemption plans, and in many cases, the only way to get that breakdown is to contact customer service.
