American Express has unveiled its latest AMEX Platinum Charge sign-up offer, which is valid for applications up till 26 September 2023.
- New cardholders will receive a Samsonite Choca Spinner 68/25 luggage and 60,000 bonus Membership Rewards (MR) points when they spend S$8,000 in the first two months of approval
- Existing AMEX cardholders will receive 60,000 bonus MR points when they spend S$8,000 in the first two months of approval
Compared to the previous offer, the bonus for new customers has been changed from 100,000 MR points to a Samsonite luggage + 60,000 MR points, though the minimum spend has also been cut from S$10,000 to S$8,000. For existing customers, the offer is the same as before.
For perspective, this is the lowest minimum spend we’ve seen for an AMEX Platinum Charge acquisition offer in the past 12 months.

If they spend S$8,000 within 60 days of card approval, they will receive 60,000 bonus MR points, plus 10,000 base MR points (based on 2 MR points per S$1.60).

This is, for all intents and purposes, the same as the public offer.
When will bonus MR points be credited?
In terms of crediting timelines:
- New customers will receive a redemption letter for the Samsonite luggage within 12 weeks after the annual fee is paid
- New/existing customers will receive 60,000 bonus MR points within 12 weeks from the date they meet the spend threshold

What counts as qualifying spending?
American Express has a list of excluded spending categories here, but the key ones to note are:
- GrabPay top-ups
- Insurance
- Public hospitals and polyclinics
- SPC transactions
- Utilities
For the avoidance of doubt, CardUp, private and non-profit hospital bills, donations, education, and anything else not explicitly stated in the exclusion list will count as eligible spend. While American Express will add donations and education to its exclusions list from 1 October 2023, an exception has been carved out for the AMEX Platinum Charge.
Spending by both principal and supplementary cardholders will be pooled when determining whether the minimum spend threshold has been met.
Terms & Conditions
This offer cannot be further stacked with any MGM bonuses, and terminating the card within six months of approval will lead to a clawback of the sign-up bonus.
How does this compare to previous offers?
For reference, here’s how the current offer compares the previous few we’ve seen.
When comparing offers across time periods, you should factor in that American Express added $1,204 of annual statement credits in Feburary 2023, and a further S$150 in April 2023. This makes the first year more lucrative (because you enjoy two sets of statement credits), but has led to a commensurate fall in the number of bonus points on offer.

I personally don’t find the current offer all that attractive, given that this is basically the same luggage that was offered to AMEX HighFlyer Cardholders in July.

Because your first membership year will overlap with two calendar years (unless you somehow happen to get approved on 1 January), you can enjoy two sets of credits in your first membership year (except the entertainment credits, which are disbursed on a monthly basis), regardless of whether you choose to renew your card from the second year onwards.

sounds like they are struggling to acquire new cardmembers, hence the slew of revisions in such a short time
not a fan of this particular offer. even though the min spend has been cut even further, the luggage on offer is the same one you could have got through the amex highflyer card. not exactly premium, more like surplus.

I would like to ask, currently I’m a Diamond member. If I enroll for the Amex Platinum benefit for Hilton status upgrade to Gold, will I be downgraded?
Also, I’m at 18 stays so far this year with 4 more upcoming stays. Will those 22 stays be added on top of the automatic Gold status that comes as benefit of Amex Platinum?
