AMEX offers a member-get-member (MGM) program, where existing cardholders can earn rewards by referring AMEX cards to friends and family. Applicants approved through the MGM program also enjoy additional rewards, such as bonus miles or MR points.
Currently, referees need to spend $50 in the first 3 months to qualify for the MGM gift. However, Mark at the Shutterwhale has spotted that from 10 October 2019 onwards, the spending requirement will be increased to $1,000 in the first 3 months.
Here’s the cards which are affected:
Card | MGM Gift (referrer) | MGM Gift (referee) |
AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend (KFA) Get your MGM bonus here |
7,500 miles | 5,000 miles if KFCC 7,500 miles if KFA |
AMEX KrisFlyer Credit Card (KFCC) Get your MGM bonus here (scroll to bottom, select KFCC) |
5,000 miles | 5,000 miles if KFCC 7,500 miles if KFA |
AMEX Platinum Credit Card Get your MGM bonus here |
15,000 MR points | 15,000 MR points |
AMEX CapitaCard | 50,000 STAR$ | 50,000 STAR$ |
It is currently not possible to refer people to the AMEX Platinum Reserve, AMEX Rewards Card, AMEX KrisFlyer Solitaire PPS Card or AMEX KrisFlyer PPS Card |
This change does not affect the AMEX Platinum Charge Card, which will continue to offer 40,000 MR points with $5,000 spending within the first 3 months after approval.
All the regular sign up offers will continue to be available for applications approved via MGM, and spending for purposes of MGM double counts towards sign up bonuses.
For example, AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend cardholders who spend S$10,000 in the first 3 months will receive 15,000 sign up bonus miles, plus 7,500 bonus miles from MGM. Likewise, AMEX Platinum Charge cardholders who spend $20,000 within the first 3 months will get 75,000 sign up bonus MR points, plus 40,000 bonus MR points from MGM.
Conclusion
If you’re thinking about applying for any of these AMEX cards via MGM, be sure to do so before 10 October or you’ll be subject to the higher spending requirement.
