New AMEX Platinum Charge offer: Up to 137,500 bonus MR points

Expired

Apply for an AMEX Platinum Charge and enjoy up to 137,500 bonus MR points with S$10,000 spend, with alternative offers available for a lower S$6,000 spend.

โš ๏ธ Story update: A third offer has now been added for new-to-AMEX customers, featuring 127,500 bonus MR points + S$200 eCapitaVouchers/S$350 Dairy Farm Group vouchers with a minimum spend of S$6,000 in 60 days.

If you applied in the period from 1-3 April 2024, you’ll be receiving an email from American Express in the next few days providing the option to switch to this offer instead. If you prefer the original offer you applied for, you need not take any action.

American Express has launched a set of welcome bonuses for the AMEX Platinum Charge, which offer up to 137,500 bonus MR points for new-to-AMEX customers.

This is the largest number of MR points that’s been offered in recent memory, but the minimum spend has also been increased to S$10,000.

However, if you’re not able to meet that threshold, then there’s also an option of getting 132,500 bonus MR points, or 127,500 bonus MR points + S$200 eCapitaVouchers/S$350 Dairy Farm Group vouchers with a minimum spend of S$6,000.

New-to-AMEX customers are defined as those who:

  • Have not cancelled a principal AMEX Platinum Charge in the past 24 months
  • Do not currently hold an existing principal American Express consumer card (DBS/UOB-issued cards do not count, nor does the AMEX HighFlyer Card)

There is no “timeout period” for a customer with a recently-cancelled card to be considered new (provided the cancelled card is not a principal AMEX Platinum Charge). However, all approvals are subject to internal review. The AMEX Platinum Charge is a distinct product from the AMEX Platinum Credit Card and AMEX Platinum Reserve.

New-to-AMEX customers who apply by 15 April 2024 and receive approval by 20 April 2024 will receive:

It’s by far the best offer we’ve seen for existing customers, but the catch is you must receive an emailer to participate (thanks to Anthony in the comments for flagging this).

What counts as qualifying spend?

Qualifying spend refers to all online and offline retail purchases, whether in Singapore dollars or foreign currency.

It excludes the following transactions:

b) Cash Advances and other cash services;
c) Express Cash;

e) Charges for dishonoured cheques;
f) Finance charges โ€“ including Line of Credit Charges and Credit Card interest charges;
g) Late payment and collection charges;
h) Tax refunds from overseas purchases;

k) Annual Card fees and Membership Rewards fees;

m) Amount billed for purchase of Membership Rewards points to top-up your points balance;
n) Bill payments and all transactions via SingPost (e.g. SAM kiosks, mobile app, online portal);

t) Charges at merchants or establishments that are excluded by American Express at its sole discretion and notified by American Express to you from time to time.

For the avoidance of doubt, CardUp, private and non-profit hospital bills, charitable donations, education, and anything else not explicitly stated in the exclusion list will count as eligible spend. While American Express added charitable donations and education to its exclusions list on 1 October 2023, an exception has been carved out for the AMEX Platinum Charge.

Do note there are certain restrictions on AMEX payments with CardUp, as summarised in the article below.

Explained: American Express restrictions on CardUp payments

Spending by both principal and supplementary cardholders will be combined when determining whether the minimum spend threshold has been met.

When will bonus MR points be credited?

All bonus MR points will be credited within 12 weeks of meeting the spend threshold.

Any questions about the crediting of bonus points should be directed to American Express.

Terms & Conditions

The 5,000 bonus MR points with S$5K spend is the public MGM offer, and T&Cs can be viewed on the MGM landing page.

How does this compare to previous offers?

For the sake of comparison, here’s a summary of the recent welcome offers we’ve seen for the AMEX Platinum Charge.

โš ๏ธ Important Note
When comparing offers across time periods, you should factor in that American Express added $1,204 of annual statement credits in Feburary 2023, and a further S$150 fashion credit in April 2023. This makes the first year more lucrative (because you enjoy two sets of statement credits), but has led to a commensurate fall in the number of bonus points on offer.

AMEX Platinum Charge: Key benefits

AMEX Platinum Charge cardholders enjoy S$1,354 of annual statement credits, plus free hotel stays, dining vouchers, airport lounge access and more

AMEX Platinum Charge cardholders can enjoy benefits such as:

  • S$1,354 of dining, entertainment, lifestyle, travel and fashion credits each calendar year
  • COMO Club C5 membership with S$260 of annual birthday vouchers (valid for both principal and supp. cards)
  • Unlimited airport lounge access for the cardholder + 1 guest
    • Priority Pass Lounges
    • Centurion Lounges
    • International American Express Lounges
    • Delta SkyClub Lounges
    • Plaza Premium Lounges
  • One complimentary hotel night every membership year
  • Tower Club access
  • Tower Club & assorted dining vouchers
  • Access to the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts programme, which offers perks such as free breakfast, room upgrades (subject to availability), a US$100 experience credit and guaranteed late check-out
  • Hilton Honors Gold status, Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status, Pan Pacific DISCOVERY Platinum status & Radisson Rewards Premium status
  • American Express Love Dining
  • American Express Chillax
  • Platinum Golf privileges

The S$1,354 of statement credits are split into:

  • S$150 fashion credits at Mr Porter and NET-A-PORTER (disbursed as S$75 per six-month period)
  • S$200 dining credits at participating local restaurants
  • S$200 dining credits at participating overseas restaurants
  • S$400 lifestyle credits at participating retail partners
  • S$204 entertainment credits for news or music streaming services (disbursed as S$17 per month)
  • S$200 airline credits for Singapore Airlines or Scoot

For more details on how to use them, refer to this comprehensive guide.

Because your first membership year will overlap with two calendar years, you can enjoy two sets of credits in your first membership year (except the entertainment credits, which are disbursed on a monthly basis), regardless of whether you choose to renew your card from the second year onwards.

This creates what I call the “first year sweet spot”, where the value you get is significantly more than the annual fee. To understand this better, check out the guide below.

The AMEX Platinum Charge first-year sweet spot

In order to get maximum value, be sure to share the AMEX Platinum Charge’s benefits with friends and family. Two supplementary cards are free for life, and enjoy perks such as Como C5 membership, complimentary lounge access, hotel elite status, Tower Club access and AMEX Love Dining & Chillax.

There seems to be an offer for existing AMEX card holders to also earn 135,000 points via https://www.americanexpress.com/en-sg/credit-cards/live-platinum/index.html?sourcecode=A0000HERHM&intlink=en-sg-hp-hero-cm-ia-032024. Not sure if i understood that correctly.

Does this card still provide KrisFlyer Gold status as a benefit?

Boon

Did in 2019

Boon

Ah was indirectly thru Infinite Journeys

When I was signing up in 2023, I remember the membership points to Krisflyer miles was 1:1 ratio. Or was it the case only for Amex International not Amex SG? It’s a bit confusing. This page (https://www.americanexpress.com/en-xb/rewards/membership-rewards/partner/Singapore-Airlines—KrisFlyer/SING) still states 1:1 conversion ratio but it is 400 points to 250 miles on Amex SG points redemption page.
